punish captives on both sides of the conflict. Anna was able to flee Luhansk for Kyiv, where she gath - ered a team of like-minded people and met with the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mis - sion in Ukraine as well as the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture. Funding from these organ - izations enabled Anna to found Blue Bird, which helps find people who are reported missing and provides psychological, medical, and legal assis - tance to victims. The organization has processed 1,500 applications from survivors, and over 3,000 people have received support from Blue Bird over the past five years. During the simultaneous release of prisoners in 2019 carried out by the self-proclaimed “republics” and the Ukrainian gov - ernment, Anna and her team were the emergency contacts for 76 detainees who needed information about their human and civil rights, psychological support, and help completing paperwork. Blue Bird provided the needed assistance and support. Anastasia Melnichenko and Anna Mokrousova are clearly two of today’s brave Ukrainian women, help - ing humanity. Donna McVay chose to honor our very own Soyuzianka, Donna Maksymowich-Waskiewicz. Donna is our everyday heroine – born and raised in our Miami community, she follows the exam - ple set by her parents, Taras and Anna Maksy - mowich, and her beloved aunt Myroslava Olga Maksymowich. Donna is the Director of the As - sumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Choir, the Artistic Direc - tor of the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami, the Pres - ident of the Ukrainian-American Club of Miami, and a leader, participant, and volunteer in her local community. She is there when you need her, for whatever reason and at the drop of a hat – whether to lead socially distanced singing with an abbreviated version of our church choir so that we can still hear our beautiful music at Sunday liturgy, or to conduct virtual dance re - hearsals with a troupe ranging in ages from 3 to 63 so they remain connected as an ensemble, prepared for performances when the pandemic subsides. Her deeds are too numerous to men - tion in this space, but suffice it to say, if you need it to be done, and you need it to be done well, you can count on Donna. And we do. Our Life | Наше життя June | Червень 2021 18 Donna Maksymowich-Waskiewicz Sometimes being forced to do things differently yields a better result than the tried and true method. Such was the case with us on February 27. Glory to Ukraine’s heroines! Long live Branch 17!
