Our Life | Наше життя August | Серпень 2021 5 Natalie Pawlenko REFLECTIONS FROM THE UNWLA PRESIDENT Natalie Pawlenko was elected President of the UNWLA at the XXXII National Convention, held virtually on June 5, 2021. This is the text of her acceptance speech. In the words of Lesya Ukrainka: "People and generations are like rings in this great chain of world life, and that chain cannot be broken." So too is the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America like a great unbroken chain as we celebrate 96 years of continuous activity this year – 96 years of devotion, passion, and commitment that flowed like a river from the thousands of women who are the foundation of our collective life. It is exciting to contemplate working with you all for the next three years. Fortunately, we are seeing the light at the end of the Coronavirus pandemic tunnel. I am confident we will emerge from this unprecedented time with a renewed understanding of how precious life is, how precious each and every one of you are, and how important it is for us to be able to continue our work, even when we are faced with an impossible challenge like a pandemic. As you know, nothing will stop a Soyuzianka! The incoming National Board is made up of a group of committed individuals with diverse backgrounds who, collectively, make for a strong team. And the resolutions that this convention has approved will form the basis of a strategic plan and serve as our guiding light for the next three years. With the aid of every single one of our members, our branches, our regional councils, I am confident that we will see even more exciting new initia- tives like those that have been put in place over the past decade, and growth in the number of new members and branches across the country. As many of you have emphasized time and time again, the growth of the organization is of paramount importance. And so, we will make that a priority in the next few years. Uniting Ukrainian American women in building a vibrant community to do good is a compelling mission. As we look towards our 100th anniversary, let us redouble our efforts in honoring the legacy of those who went before us and simultaneously keep our gaze directed forward towards new opportunities. In closing, a few words of thanks: • First, to the Convention Committee led by Halyna Henhalo. Thank you for all your work. I trust that we will still have a chance to hold a convention in your beautiful city of Philadelphia. • To Vera Kushnir, the National Executive liaison to the Convention Committee, who so competently enabled Incoming President Natalie Pawlenko presents a tribute book to outgoing President Marianna Zajac. Новообрана голова Наталя Павленко дарує уступаючій голові Маріянні Заяць Книгу пошани. us to hold this convention virtually – a first! • To Zenia Brozyna, who so ably facilitated this unprecedented convention. • To Roman Vaskiv, our IT guru – thank you for your professional expertise. • To the outgoing National Executive and Standing Chairs – we have spent a great deal of time together, and I want to say that your determination and dedication to this organization have become an inspiration to us all. • To all the delegates to this convention – for your trust in the newly elected leadership, we truly thank you! • Finally, I would like to express my deepest thanks to Marianna Za- jac, who for 13 years provided the UNWLA with wise and com- passionate leadership. And on behalf of the entire organization, thank you for the excellent example you have set for us. On behalf of all your UNWLA friends and those you have touched around the world, please accept this tribute book, which contains words of thanks and gratitude from all. Honored Presidents, Honored Members, dear delegates and guests – dear sisters. We are the chain, we will never be broken, and I look to each one of you to help strengthen and grow the links and make this chain shine like never before. May God keep each of you and all of us. Glory to America! Glory to Ukraine!
