Word By Word A Spotlight On 100 Years Of Literary Publications by Ksenia Rychtycka and Myrosia Stefaniuk The idea for a literary event marking over a century of publica tions by Michigan Ukrainians was born when members of Branch 96 reviewed the vast library of books housed in their domivka and wondered how many of them were published by Michigan Ukrainians. T heir search uncovered over 200 books, ranging from fiction, poe try, non - fiction, memoir and drama to history, politics and journalism (not counting commemorative publications, almanacs, bulletins and booklets of individual organizations). The publications in - cluded works from the 1800s to the present and reflected the history of the metro Detroit community, from the earliest a rrival of Ukrainian immigrants. And so began the monumental task of sorting the books by subject matter, compiling an electronic bibl iography and displaying the pub - lications in a trio of large e xhibit cases at the domivka. An afternoon of readings was planned with the objective of introducing thi s treasure trove of history and literature to the local community, especially the younger ge nerations that were not familiar with this rich past . The vis ion for this event was spearheaded by local author and longtime Branch 96 member Myrosia Stefaniuk, who chaired the committee, lending her distinct creative touch to the program. The presentation, aptly named “Word By Word — 100 Years of Literary Publicatio ns by Michigan Ukrainians,” took place on September 15, 2019, in the UNWLA domivka before a packed hall of attendees. In her opening remarks, Branch 96 co - president Ms. Catherine Kizym a stated “It is amazing, given our Ukrainian history of suppres - sion, op pression, deportation and confiscation that the Ukrainian word has somehow survived from Shevchenko to today . ” She then introduced Ms. Stefaniuk, who as program narrator, skillfully pro vided a concise yet comprehensive historical overview of Michigan’s Ukr ainian community and its publication output. The bilingual presentation centered on three distinct periods of publication : the late 1880s to World War II, post - World War II to the 1990 s, and the 1990s to present , brought to life by select literary reading s representing each era. All of the works were read by current authors and relatives of authors of the past . Select ed excerpts from the past included works by Mary Beck, Iryna Wynnycka - Pelenska, Olek sa Ve - retenchenko, Edward Kozak, Bohdan Nyzhan - kiwskyj, Maria Harasewych, Mykhaylo Smyk, Daria Rychtycka and Zenon Tarnavsky. Representing the current generation of authors were works by Assya Humesky, Nina Wasylkewych, Ksenia Rychtycka, Alex Tarnavsky and M yrosia Stefaniuk.
