10 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “ НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2020 I n May 2011, Resolution #2 , composed at the X XIX Convention , read “To inquire int o the pos - sibility of establishing a UNWLA Endowment Fund for Lectureship in Women’s Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv.” This rather bold move was easily adopted and the delegates gave the UNWLA Executive the au thority to move ahea d with negotiations. After more than a year of discussions with UCU, with each organization setting its own parameters, September 2012 w itnessed the official opening of the “UNWLA Women’s Studies Lectureship . ” A protocol of inviting visiting lecturers as w ell as arranging lectures open to the general public was established. UNWLA fundraising efforts collected $100,000 as per the signed agr eement with the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation (UCEF). The l ectureship evol ved as interest grew ; topics expa nded from contemporary issues to historical perspectives . A t the end of 2017, the UNWLA and the UCEF signed an addendum to the original agreement in order to expand the Lectureship into a Women’s Studies Center. This “upgra de” (UNWLA contributes $10,000 an nually) defined that the Center would have its own room on campus, that an administrative aide would be made available to Halyna Teslyuk (coordinator of the Women’s Studies Lectureship and now Center ), and that a working li brary would be established. As Dr . Marta Bohachevska - Chomiak (director of the UNWLA program) stated , “The UCU Women’s Studies Center will give us a very effective way of realistically participating in Ukraine’s effective integration into the in ternational community. The women will acquire awareness of their potential and a better understanding of how an institutional framework helps individuals flourish. The Women’s Studi es Center will be a wonderful catalyst for other academic institutions.” Wh y am I revis iting the history of the Women’s Studies Center at this time? Because t his program is able to offer deeper support and academic advice and allow either history or social studies majors to focus on women’s studies. Last semester, the first Maste rs graduate very successfully defended her th e sis on a women’s studies topic: "The image of war and foreign occupation in the women's context: Russian narratives of the war 1812 . " Daria Reznyk, whom the Center supported academically and through which Daria received a grant, wrote to me: “ I had t he o pportunity to discover women in the early NINETEENTH century — their thoughts, their experiences, their mode of thinking. It was a true no velty for me, since I was engaged in a very different historical period during my bache lor’s program. The War of 1812 is traditionally viewed through the eyes of a man: not only thematically, but also stylistically. Female writing during this period was on the margins , and my goal was to bring it to the forefront. How did the women affected by this war feel? How did the wom en of this period write about these times ? Were the judgements of the peasant woman and the noblewoman the same? Did the women of the ti me construct their narratives differently from the men? I attempted to answer all these questions and more in my thesis and I am very confident that I succeeded . ” Daria also shared that she had always dreamed to be able to research just such a historical to pic and that the Women’s Studies Center at UCU enabled and supported h er to be able to pursue her dream! The 64th Sessio n of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations will take place March 9 – 22 , 2020 , in New York City. In 2020, the global community will mark the twenty - fifth anniversary of the ado ption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) , which is c onsidered the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing women’s rights . This year’s sessi on will be reviewing the progress of this action : “Bejing + 25.” We are proud to ackno wledge our Ukrainian women’s accom plishments : Dr . Lyudmyla Porokhnyak, president of the National Council of Women of Ukraine and VP of the International Council of Wo men European Center, was announced as one of a list of candidates who won "honorable m ention" in the Women of Distinctio n Awards competition sponsored by the NGO CSW . The Institute of Cultural Affairs of Ukraine will host a pa nel entitled Discriminatio n Based on "Motherhood" and Violence Against Women as a Major Obstacle to Equitable So cieties . T he World Federation o f Ukrainian Women's Organizations’ panel will address “Beijing+25:
