“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕР ВЕНЬ 2020 W WW. UNWLA.ORG 5 We find ourselves in the same environment of the Covid - 19 threat as we did last month and the month before . . . with no definitive end in sight. The UNWLA ha s been active in reaching out to its membership through two different initi atives. On April 20, National Officer at Large Na- talia Pawlenko and VP of Public Relations, Nadia Nynka, issued a Facebook “thank you” offering heartfelt thanks to all of the medic al workers who were working tirelessly, often at risk to their own lives, t o help those struggling and dying of Covid 19, as well as to the food and service workers who are ensuring that food delivery and other vital ser- vices continue. The post stated “Man y of our So- yuzianky are among those medical and service workers. We salute you and are grateful and proud of your heroic work. Also, many branches have foun d ways of helping within their communities by reaching out in unique ways to those who are el- derly, at risk, alone or struggling.” They hope to share these professional and/or humanitarian ef- forts in a future issue of Our Life and request that UNWLA member s share their stories by sending pictures and articles to vp - pr@unwla.org. We are all coping as be st we can and find- ing what works best for us. Many of us are spend- ing much more time on the internet, on Facebook, etc. In connection with this, I recently came across an essay by CNN editor David Alan. Entitled “The Wisdom Project,” this series attempts t o apply the wisdom and philosophy documented from ancient times right throu gh pop culture to life during this time of the pandemic. T wo examples that I foun d most striking follow: 1. Two hundred years before this coronavirus, Ger- man writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had some metaphorical advice on doing your part: "Let everyone s weep in front of his own door, and the whole world will be clean." My interpretat ion of this quote is that if each of us contributes to society in our own small way, the world will be a better place. 2. Quaker missionary Etienne de Grellet wrote, “I shal l pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to an y human being; let me do it now.” The evolution of this quote would lead us to look out for others a t this critical time. And the UNWLA has, once again, done so. On April 28, 2020, UNWLA National So- cial Welfare Chair Oka Hrycak initiated an email blast (as well as a Facebook post and appeal on our website) to our membership: “We share our sad- ness for tho se who are struggling and dying of Covid 19. We are also grateful to all me dical work- ers who care for the ill and to the service workers who ensure food del ivery and other essential ser- vices. Our home, the United States , has been hit es- pecially hard by the Covid 19 pandemic, not only health - wise, but also economically. In this la nd of plenty, it has now been reported that 1 of 12 adults and 1 of 7 children ar e food insecure.” With this introduction, the UNWLA launched a new project — Feeding the Hungry, UNWL A for USA — and invited all branches to donate toward a gift of food for thos e in need. In- dividual donations were also encouraged. UNWLA Headquarters pledged that it would match all do- nations up to $10,000. Feeding America was cho- sen as the organization that would receive our do- nation because it is a national service working with f ood banks and food pantries throughout the United States. (An important fact is t hat Charity Navigator — a charity assessment organization that evaluates charitable organizations in t he United States — gives Feeding America an overall score of 94.3). It goes w ithout saying, that our members are encouraged (and we are assured that they are do- ing so) to help the needy, both within the Ukrain- ian community and beyond, in their local areas. Since this announcement, Social Welfare Chairs of our Regional Council s have promoted the fund- raiser to their members. After watching several weeks of news reports demonstrating lines of families
