This project, run with John - Paul Himka and Frances Swirypa, was initiated in response to the rapid closing of the Ukrainian churches on the prairies, churches that are almost synonymous with the Ukrainian Canadian culture. The project ran for 10 years , covered the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan , and resulted in the production of the popular website : https://livingcultures.ualberta.ca/sanctuary/ . This site will soon be expanded , and a database of all of Kononenko’s recor dings will be available through the University of Alberta library. Kononenko’s Sanctuary Project research has already resulted in several articles, published internationally (including in Ukraine). She hopes to publish books based on this work , both i n Ukr aine and in North America , and t o stage an exhibit at the Honchar Museum in Kyiv. Most folklorists work with contemporary material, such as that which Kononenko gathers during her fieldwork. They also work with traditional texts recorded in the past , such as Ukrainian dumy ( epic poems based on Ukrainian history ) about rai ds by Turkish a nd Tatar slave traders, conflicts with the Ottoman Empire, the Khmelnytsky u prising, and life in Ukraine . E xtremely important to Ukrainian identity , the dumy are virtual emb lem s of Ukrain e’s str uggle for freedom. Kononenko had worked on a translation of th ese songs into English while she was a graduate student at Harvard University. Shortly after her arrival in Canada, her interactions with the community convinced her that a new, modern translation, complete with historical discussions, was needed. She work ed on such a translation , and her book Ukrainian Epic and Historical Song: Folklore in Context was published by the University of Toronto Press in 2019. T h e book has just wo n the Barbara Heldt Award for best translation from any Slavic language into Englis h ; the award was presented to Kononenko at the annual meeting of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies to be held in San Francisco in November 2019 .
