“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2020 WWW. UNWLA.OR G 27 A Fond Farewell to a Dear Friend and Colleague with Appreciation and Affection M. Orysia Jacus volunteered to serve as Treasurer on the UNWLA Scholarship Program committee in 1986 and was thus part of the team when the UNWLA Scholarship Pro - gram was computerized that same year. From the start, she was a dedicated and determined member of our committee, someone who fully understood what it meant to be a destitute child and fully understood the value of financial and moral support from the ge - nerous sponsors who contribute to and support the UNWLA Scholar - ship/Children - Student Spon sor - ship Program. One reason for this empathy can be found in Orysia’s personal history. Her widowed mother, who se husband was killed near Brody, Ukraine, went through the turmoil of WWII, DP camp and was eventually allowed to immigrate to the USA with her two daughters. The family knew what it was to be poor and also knew what it meant to get help from generous and caring people. After graduating from high school , Orysia became a successful bookkeeper and worked for a series of American firms until her retirement. In 1997 she took over the responsibility of bringing the UNWLA’s publication Our Life’s magazine into the digital age by computerizing UNWLA mem - bership a nd subscribers and doing the accounting work necessary for Our Life . Orysia also had other responsibilities within the UNWLA National Committee. Much of this work focused on the UNWLA Scholarship Program/ Children - Student Sponsorship Program and ensuring th at the program’s vision was adhered to and augmented as needs evolved and changed. The program’s priority was and continues to be to help orphans, abandoned children, children from large families, etc., achieve their goals through education. It is thanks to generous UNWLA sponsors who understand their plights and are willing to see “their child” succeed and become professional that the program and the young people it supports has been successful and meani ngful. Among those generous sponsors are Orysia and her husband and their daughter Taisa. Life brings change, and change is often bittersweet. Thus it was with good wishes tinged with sadness that we bid farewell to M. Orysia Jacus and her husband Jurij w hen they moved to Arizona to be near their daughter Taisa, a member of UNWLA Branch 3. How can we thank someone who gave her all for success of the UNWLA Scholarship Program/Children - Student Sponsor - ship Pro gram? Hopefully, this thanks can best be expres sed by continuing the work Orysia was so involved in and such an important part of. Orysiu , we love you and thank you for your dedication. You will be greatly missed! May God Bless you and your family. With gratitude and affection, the UNWLA Scholarship S tanding Committee: Anna Krawczuk, Luba Bilowchtchuk, Daria Nowakiwska Lissy, Nadia Jaworiw, Zoriana Haftkowycz and Victoria Mischenko.
