“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2019 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 9 Christmas is a season of giving and of helping the less fortunate , and t he UNWLA was very generous and very busy this past C hristmas season . One fo- cus of our aid was S everodonetsk , the current ad- ministrative cent er of the Luhansk Oblast because the actual capital of the o blast is currently con- trolled by pro - Russian separatists , n ot by Ukr ain- ian authorities. The creation of a mi ssion in Severodonetsk was prompted by his Beatitude Svi- atoslav, the head of the U krainian Greek Catholic Church (U GCC ) , who proclaimed in 2016: "Let's forge to the east! because the future of the UGCC and Ukraine li es where the war is on going and the peo ple are suffering. ” Following the UNWLA’s ini- tial $7,000 donation , a n additional $8,000 was sent for the community center in Severodonetsk. The strides made here have been quite remarkable. O ur current Social Welfare Chair Oka Hrycak and Dr. Maria Furtak , the UNWLA’s Social Welfare rep in Ukraine, visited the city i n October 2018 and met with Rev . Yurij Yurchyk, the center’s d irector . (see Ms. Hrycak ’ s article in December 2018 issue of OL). UNWLA Br . 75 of New Jersey continue s to help the orphanage in Pokr ovsk located in the Do- netsk Oblast, and an additional $1,500 has been sent from UNWLA headquarters to support this endeavor. This donation has been designated for winter season items like boot s, jackets , etc. $10,000 has also been sent to Rev. Stepan Sus, Head Chaplain of the Lviv Archeparchy of the UGCC, for the annual winter camps that UNWLA supports. T hree camp sessions were scheduled : a Christmas theme at the Lviv orphanage (Jan . 2 to Jan. 30); Chris tmas camps for the children of East- ern Ukraine (Jan . 1 4 t o Jan. 30); and Christmas camps for children living in foster care (Jan . 21 to Jan. 27). The volunteers at each camp were trained to focus on the emotional and psychological needs of each group of ch ildren. Seventy - five elderly women in Ukraine, many o f whom are from families that were exiled to Siberia and elsewhere, each received a Christ- mas card signed by the UNWLA President as well as a monetary gift of $20 (total of $1,500) as part of our Christ mas/Easter “Babusi Fund” cam- paign. T he UNWLA also main tains close contact with the Dzherelo Children’s Rehabilitation Centre in Lviv whose mission is to “create opportunities for a better future for children and youth with spe- cial needs and their families .” In January, the UN- WLA presented D zhe relo with $10,0 00 , a gift ear- marked for professional in - service training for Dzherelo’s te achers ; a special request has been made that other special needs teachers from the re- gion be invited to participate. O n December 15, the UNWLA appeal ed to its membership to support our "Sea of Azov Christ- mas project . " The UNWLA Executive Board pro- posed to show support to those living in the Sea of Azov area which has been blockaded after Russian forces attacked three Ukr ainian navy vessels and took Ukrainian sailors into custody. Re acting to the human face of this latest act of war, our con- tacts will deliver Christmas presents to selected or- phanages in the cities of Mariupol and Berdyansk ; $5,000 has been sent to Ukraine for this cause. According to prior written agreements with the Ukrainian Catholic Education Found a- tion, we continue to contribute $10,000 (each) to the Institute of Mental Health/Prostir Nadii and the UNWLA Women's Studies Center at UCU. The financing of social projects at the Institute of Men- tal Health and to Prosti r Nadii (the Space of Hope Center) is to help memb ers of the military and their families with treatment for PTSD and general trauma until the year 2020. The UCU Women's Studies Center will prov ide a vehicle for Ukraine’s real participation in and effective integration into the international community in this discipline. The UNWLA, as the founder of the Center’s predeces- sor (Lectureship) has committed to, as stated above, supplementing the Center ’s annual ex- penses with $10,000. Yulia Wozniuk, t he winner of “Miss Ukrainian N ew J ersey ” (organized and hosted by UNWLA Branch 137 on November 14, 2018) will be traveling to Ukraine as the UNWLA ’s goodwill a m- bassador by visiting or joining UNWLA humani- ta rian and social welfare projects in Ukraine. She will be presen ting "mock" checks on behalf of the UNWLA to: Dzherelo, Prostir Nadii , and the Wom- en's Studies Center (all mentioned above) as deliv- ery of the actual funds to these entities i s arranged from the U nited States . We sincerely thank our do- nors for making these UNWLA initiatives possible . God bless you all !
