“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2019 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 31 News from Branch 14, Atlanta, Georgia Submitted by Kathleen Perzik Tice At our most recent meeting, we celebrated our Patroness, Lesya Ukrainka — her life and works. Gerri Hajduk, past president of our branch headed up a discussion detailing the poet’s life struggles and her works. We are very honored to have Lesya Ukrainka as o ur Pa- troness and were also honored to have Liliyah Podkopayeva, all around gold metal gymnas tic winner in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, attend this meeting. Liliyah is now residing in Atlanta and traveling internationally, sharing her expertise and training s kills regarding gymnastics. During the same meeting, Branch 14 member Tetiana Lendiel, who w as born and raised in Ukraine, shared information regarding how the schools in Ukraine conduct in - depth classes about L. Ukrainka. We will continue to hold further L. Ukrainka themed meetings, which will include readings of her works and dis- cussions about her life. Branch 14 President Kathleen Perzik Tice, Liliyah Podkopayeva , all around gold medalist 1996 Olympics for gymnastics and Laryssa Temple, board member of Branch 14 Branch 95 Does Brunch After Mass each Sunday a t Holy Trinity Ukrainia n Catholic Church in Kerhonkson, N.Y., various groups related to the c hurc h and the community take turns offering cake and coffee in the Church Hall. This provides an opportunity for neighbors, friends and families to connect and catch up before re- turning home to their busy lives. For many years, Branch 95 has been one of the gr oups taking their turn helping with this commu- nity gathering. Recently , our branch members de- cided to “change things up” and planned a “Branch 95 Brunch , ” offering borscht and ka- nap ky along with coffee, cider and dessert for a small donation. Posters were made and displayed in the c hurch hall, and Father Ivan Kasczcak announced the news at the end of Mass several Sundays before the event. A flyer for the event was created by M. Panch ys hy n. Branch 95 members decorat ed the hall with pumpkins and seasonal table arrangements . The food was prepped the day before, and 7 trays of lovely kanapky were artistically arranged and laid out . A huge pot of b ors h ch was heat ed up during Mass. Baked go od s were made and donated by branch members who also did the serving. After Mass, a pretty good crowd gathered to partake of food and friendship ; the rainy Fall weather seemed to encourage people to linger longer . T ake - out containers of soup were provided fo r those who could not stay or wanted to take for someone who could not attend. A raffle was part of the event. Prizes were a gift basket of 3 bottles of wine and another basket entitled “Tea for Two” was filled with autumn themed cups, plates, and napki ns , a vase of silk flowers and leaves , and a variety of cookies, apple spice tea and cute pumpkin shaped votive candles. The money raised by the raffle and the breakfast was shared with the c hurch as a thank you for the use of the h all. Much to our delig ht there were no leftovers and two very happy winners of the gifts baskets! Be- cause t his Fall Brunch went so well (and because we were already asked about it ) , we may be willing to do another one sooner than later . One idea already floating around is a Mid - W inter event when everyone has “cabin fever” and is looking for an excuse to stay out and enjoy a neighborhood gathering.
