14 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШ Е ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2019 Letter from a Reader Dear Editors, I was very disappointed that the important article about the work of WFUWO was in Ukrainian only. Many of my members in our English - spe aking branch did not get the opportunity to learn more about the work of this organization. In fact there are many articl es that are in Ukrainian, which we cannot read or reading them is too laborious. Of the 36 pages of this issue [October 2019], six full pages (one was the USPS State- ment of Ownership page) and two almost half pages and one filler were in English. Even the notice about faster delivery was in Ukrainian only. This appears to be a trend. I do not know how we can expect to keep or attract mem bers of Ukrain- ian descent who do not speak or read Ukrainian to our organization. We just picked up a new member who is o f Ukrainian descent who cannot read or speak Ukrainian and who is looking forward to receiving Our Life . Little does she know what disa ppointment is in store for her as she will only be able to look at the pictures. Your help is needed to effect a better b alance of articles between Ukrainian and English. In fact, very important articles need to be in both languages. - Nadia Jaworiw, Pres ident Branch 98 Response from the English - language editor I received Ms. Jaworiw’s letter from UNWLA President Marianna Zajac just as we were wrapping up the November issue of Our Life and beginning work on materials for the December issue. In one of tho se strange twists of fate, I had just finished tweaking a wonderful article submitted by Marianna Szczawinsky Crans (a fr equent contributor), which addresses the subject of her own history of submitting articles to the magazine. I found Ms. Crans’s article (see page 15 ) entertaining as well as informative and instructive. It is my sincere hope that it inspires other UNWLA me mbers to take the leap and submit their own stories for publication. Bottom line is that we publish what we get and rely on our readers to submit articles. Consider this an open invitation. We welcome your stories, articles and comments and look forward to seeing more of them. A copy of our editorial guidelines follows. - tsc Guidelines for Submitting Articles to Our Life 1. Please send each article as Word document attachment via email to unwlaourlife@gmail.com. Please DO NOT type your article into the body of your email or send as a PDF file. 2. Identify your work . In the subject line of your email, please provide title or subject of t he article you are submitting for publication and designate whether the article is in English or Ukrainian. (type in ENG or UKR to identify which). If applicable, include UNWLA Branch #. 3. The Only Time Spelling Really Counts. We know a lo t of people, bu t we do not know everyone and rely on our authors to provide correct spelling of first and last names of everyone mentioned in articles each time the names are mentioned. We don’t like to guess which version is correct. 4. Deadlines. Produc ing a bilingual monthly magazine is a complex matter that requires extensive coop- eration and coordination between and among authors, photographers, editors, and Computoprint. Editing and layout take time and effort and it is for this reason that we set dea dlines for mate rials to be published in any given month. Materials submitted later than the designated deadline wreak havoc on the production process and often create unnecessary additional work for all concerned. Please note that all materials (ar- ticles, photos, artwork ) for any given issue of the magazine must be received by the editors by the 5th of the month preceding the month of publication. Materials received after this deadline may be bumped to the next issue. Last but not least : Please do not send identical arti cles to Our Life and any other publication simulta- neously as this constitutes a breach of professional courtesy. (In some cases, it is also illegal to do this as it may violate copyright laws.) If you feel the information you wrote about is important enoug h to share with a broader or different audience, write a separate and distinct article for each publication.
