“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2019 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 9 It is almost a year since the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) was instituted at a Unification Council held in Kyiv on December 15, 2018, and Epifaniy was elected as its first Metropolitan at this council by secret ballot at St. Sophia’s Cathedral. T he new ecclesiastical body was granted the “to- mos of autocephaly” by the Ecumenical Pat r iar- chate of Constantinople in Istanbul on January 5, 2019. "This day will go down in history as a sacred day, a day of the creation of the Ukrainian Auto- cephalous Orthodox Ch urch, a day of final inde- pendence from the Russian Federation," said for- mer Presid ent of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. In an interview with Radio Free Liberty on February 3, 2019, Metropolitan Epifaniy stated the OCU is hopeful of gaining recognition from seve ral foreign Orthodox churches, specifically naming the Greek and Cypriot Orthodox churches as ones he ex- pected to be among the first to offer such recogni- tion. His wish has become reality in that both of these churches have now officially recognized the UO C. The recognition of the Greek Orthodox Church was one of the reasons for the Met ropoli- tan’s visit to NYC; the Cypriot Orthodox Church announced its recognition of the UOC as I write this article. On Friday, October 18, 2019 the Ukrainian Institute of America, in cooperation with the Uk - rainian Congress Committee of America, or ga- nized a meeting with His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, on the occasion of his inaugural visit to the United States. During his speech that evening, Met. Epi- faniy underscored that the union needs to be con- firmed by building and strengthening the church. Although many challenges exist, he shared his hopes and ambitious plans as I and UNWLA’s two Officers at Large, Valentyna Tab aka and Natalia Pawlenko, listened with other eager invited at- tendees. We were even able to have a short infor- mal meeting with the Metropolitan during which His Beatitude expressed his gratitude for our assis- tance to the UOC Volyn’ Spiritual Academy , and we shared information about this and the many other UNWLA projects in Ukraine with him. ( See p hoto on page 2 ) The UNWLA was a silver sponsor of the Ukrainian National Association’s (UNA) 125 th an- niversary celebratory concert held on November 2. Although I, N adia Nynka (VP of PR) and Officers at large Valentyna Tabaka and Natalia Pawlenko were the official representatives of our orga niza- tion, many more UNWLA members also attended this event. The concert showcased talent from the US, Canada and Ukraine. A shor t history of the or- ganization was presented by the Master of Cere- monies, Roman Hirniak, and President Stefan Ka- czaraj shared a greeting from the UNA. As you may recall, the UNA sponsored our Friday evening “Membership Appreciation” at our 2017 UNWLA Convention in Tampa, Florida. As two of the long- est running organizations in the Ukrainian dias- pora, it is appropriate and necessary for us to sup- port each other ! Congratulations UNA ! ( Photo 2, page 2 ) The UNWLA’s Social Media Chair, Oksana Lodziuk, has been very busy posting and reposting information about UNWLA regional council and branch events on our website, allowing us to see interesting, exciting, varied events throughout the country. We are very grateful for our members’ contributions to the richness of our growing and dynamic organization! Below I will share in chro n- ological order a few descript ions and photos of past and planned events. My goal here was to demon- strate the varied interests and c ommitment of our membership; my methodology was to access infor- mation on Facebook and from quarterly Regional Council reports presented during a quar terl y con- ference call with UNWLA First VP Lida Jachnycky.
