“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2019 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 7 UNWLA Establishes Fund Supporting the Spiritual Rebirth of Ukraine by Nadia Nynka, UNWLA VP for Public Relations “Today Ukraine is experiencing a spiritual re - birth,” said Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk when he visited the United States last August. Un- fortunately, the Archbishop also noted that despite the spiritual awakening, especially in Eastern Ukraine, there are not enough priests to serve the people. Furthermore, with the unification of the Ukraini an Orthodox churches into one Ukrainian Orthodox Church, many parishioners of the Mos- cow Patriarchate are moving to the newly united Ukrainian Orthodox Church. But here too, a short- age of Orthodox priests exists. Since Ukraine’s independence, the UN- WLA, a s a leading organization in the diaspora, has a very unique opportunity to help both the Ukrain- ian Greek Catholic and the newly united Ukrainian Orthodox churches. Therefore, the UNWLA is an- nouncing a new program: “UNWLA Supports the Spiritual Growth of Uk raine.” As a part of this program, the UNWLA will be providing fi- nancial support to two theo logical seminaries: the Kyiv Three Saints Theological Seminary of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Ukrain- ian Orthodox Volyn Orthodox Theological Acad- emy . The Three Saints Theological Seminary is the only Catholic seminary in Ukraine focused on the mission of preparing priests who will serve in the north - central, eastern and southern territories of the country. As Reverend Petro Zhuk, the rector of the se minary, explained, “ It will be these young boys who will help rebuild Ukraine, the Ukrainian church, and Ukrainian culture in the territories that are now temporarily occupied .” As explained by the Reverend Volodymyr Vakin, the rector of the Volyn Orthodo x Academy, “The Volyn Orthodox Theological Academy is working to establish clear moral and family values, thus transforming post - communist influence and public opinion.” At present, the A cademy is wor k- ing tirelessly to strengthen spiritual growth within U kraine’s eastern territories. Many of its seminar- ians come from the Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts, and a number of its students served in volunteer battalions and in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The UNWLA wholeheartedly supports the spiritual growth of Ukra ine and has created a fund to help defray the costs associated with semi nari- ans’ studies. All funds raised for this endeavor will be divided equally between the two academies. We are confident that we will receive the financial sup- port and commitment from our membership and the Ukrainian community. Please help us support this endeavor with your contributions. Checks made out to “UNWLA” should include the notation “Ukraine’s Spiritual Growth Fund” and be sent to UNWLA, 203 Second Ave, New York, NY 10003. Mo re information on this endeavor can be found on the UNWLA’s newly redesigned Facebook page. A Note from the Editors: Guidelines for Submitting Articles to Our Life 1. Please send each article as Word document attachment via email to unwlaourlife@gmail.com. Please DO NOT type your article into the body of your email or send as a PDF file. 2. Identify your work . In the subject line of your email, please provide title or subject of the article you are submitting for publication and designate whether the article is in English or Ukrainian. (type in ENG or UKR to identify which). If appli- cable, include UNWLA Branch #. 3. The Only Time Spelling Really Counts. We know a lo t of people, but we do not know everyone and rely on our authors to provide correct spelling of first and last names of everyone mentioned in articles each time the names are men- tioned. We don’t like to guess which version is correct. 4. Deadlines. Produc ing a bilingual monthly magazine is a complex matter that requires extensive cooperation and coor- dination between and among authors, photographers, editors, and Computoprint. Editing and layout take time and effort and it is for this reason that we set dea dlines for materials to be published in any given month. Materials submitted later than the designated deadline wreak havoc on the production process and often create unnecessary additional work for all concerned. Please note that all materials (articles a nd photos) for any given issue of the magazine must be received by the editors by the 5th of the month preceding the month of publication. Materials received after this deadline may be bumped to the next issue. Last but not least : Please do not send ident ical articles to Our Life and any other publication simultaneously as this con- stitutes a breach of professional courtesy. (In some cases, it is also illegal to do this as it may violate copyright laws.) If you feel the information you wrote about is import ant enough to share with a broader or different audience, write a separate and distinct article for each publication. Thank You for all your hard work and for your cooperation!
