“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2019 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 5 Christ is Risen! Indeed he is Risen! I wish each of our readers the opportunity to fill your life with new hope, new goals, new aspirations this Easter season! – UNWLA President Marianna Zajac ______________________ April 2019 brings the Easter season upon us. It is a time of spirituality, and offers us the opportunity to reflect. Within this context during this holy sea- son, the UNWLA leadership is proud and excited to announce our newest project: UNWLA Sup- ports the Spiritual Rebirth of Ukraine. (see article announcing this initiative on p. 7 ). UNWLA leadership feels that this is the op- portune time in Ukraine’s history (especially since the unification of the Orthodox churches in Janu- ary of this year) to help both the Ukrainian Catho- lic and Ukrainian Orthodox churches via the edu- cation of seminar ians. Both churches are trying to reaffirm Christian, moral and family values through their missions, especially at this time of war and unrest in Ukraine. Before this very special project was announced, multiple conversations took place with the rectors o f the Three Saints The- ological Seminary and the Volyn Orthodox Theo- logical Academy. The main reason these two edu- cational institutions were chosen for this initiative was that both are presently focusing on the train- ing of future priests who will take thei r spiritual mission into the eastern regions of Ukraine to en- courage and facilitate a spiritual rebirth. I had per- sonally met Fr. Rector Petro Zhuk in September 2018. During this visit, I also met many seminari- ans and toured the classrooms and the church. The dedication of the staff and faculty and the peace and hope felt in the seminary were palpable. In connection with our new endeavor, UN- WLA member - at - large Valentyna Tabaka re- searched Ukrainian Orthodox seminaries and was drawn to Volyn by its patriot ism. She subsequently spoke with the Metropolitan of the Lutsk and Volyn Eparchies, Mykhail Zinkevych, and Rector Volodymyr Vakin, respectively. Ms. Tabaka was es- pecially moved by the Volyn Academy’s clear path to fulfilling its mission. On Tuesday, March 5, I shared with Rector Zhuk our proposed project guidelines and our planned fundraising efforts, asking for his input and agreement so we could move forward. He was very grateful, stating that the seminary has become quite overcrowded as the number of se minarians has grown to 78, and confirming that the UNWLA project was very timely as the need has become more pressing. He asked if he could prepare a presentation about the seminary and its students, its goals, etc., for the UNWLA membership. Fr. Rector V olodymyr Vakin of the Volyn Academy seemed to be even more humble and grateful for our offer to help because his Academy has not received much attention or financial sup- port from the diaspora. He stated that he was awed by such generosity and also awed by an organiza- tion willing to help others without “having to do so.” He and I reviewed the UNWLA’s history and the organization’s vision for supporting the educa- tion of seminarians who would return to the East to serve the Church. Rector Vakin asked for sug- ge stions on introducing the Academy to our mem- bership, and we will be working together to achieve this end. The UNWLA created its War Victims’ Fund in 2015 and followed this by supporting Prostir Na- dii in 2016. The first endeavor was to help the
