“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2018 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 7 Since 2008, each of my trips to Ukraine has been unique and filled with special experiences; this year’s trip (Sept. 7 – 21) was no less exceptional. The UNWLA has always been dedicated and com- mitted to helping Ukraine and Ukrainians, and this commitment has been recognized by the Ukrainian national community organization “Blahodijna Ukraina” in 2017. This recogniti on continues: Dur- ing my first two days in Kyiv the UNWLA was hon- ored twice for its commitment and dedication. I was extremely honored to accept the recognition on behalf of each UNWLA member. Sunday, Sept. 9 . Rector Fr. Petro Zhuk of the Ukrainian Greek - C atholic Kyiv Three Holy Hier- archs Spiritual Seminary presented me with the “Patriarchal certificate of recognition,” which was initiated by and signed by Ukrainian Greek Catho- lic Patriarch Sviatoslav. For two years now the UN- WLA has supported a portion of the ex penses of the seminarians from northern, central, eastern and southern Ukraine, who en tered the seminary with financial challenges. The number of seminar- ians supported in 2018 is twenty - one. After their ordination, these young men will be ret urning to their home territories to serve their re spective ________________________________________ Top, from left: 7. During his visit to the United States, Patriarch Sviatoslav clearly stated that this semi- nary and this particular group of seminarians are critical for the future of the UG C C in the war af- fected areas. On Sept. 9, we also visited to t he Bykivnia graves, a National Historic Memorial on the site of the former village of Bykivnia, on the outskirts of Kyiv. During the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union , it was one of the unmarked mass grave sites where the NKVD ( the Soviet secret police) dis- posed of thousands of executed "enemies of the So- viet state." It is estimated that approximately 100,000 Ukrainians and 2 0,000 Poles were buried here. It was not until the 1990s that the authorities of independent Ukraine confirmed that thousands of victims were buried there. On April 30, 1994, a large memori al to the victims of communism was opened in Bykivnia. The memorial site exudes an eerie feeling of deep sadness. The following day (Sept. 10) we had an au- dience with Patriarch Filaret of the Ukrain- ian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarch. It was my great honor to accept from the Patriarch the medal of The Holy Great Martyr Barbara for the commitment of the UNWLA toward Ukraine. During this visit, the Patriarch thanked the UNWLA for its continued dedica- tion to Ukrainians of all walks of life. I was able to share more detailed information about the UNWLA’s history and current projects with him. The “tomos of autocephaly” from the pa- triarch of Constantinople, granting the Kyiv - led church full clerical independence, soon took over the discussion as we were all very interested in hearing the Patriarch’s views. This is truly a his- torical time in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and it was a great honor to be able to be part of the di- alogue. Monday, Sept. 10. As I noted in my column in the September issue of Our Life , we have entered into a very rewarding and exciting developing coopera- tion and partnership with the Shevchenko Scien- tific Society. In 2015 the Society initiated a special scholarship program for talented Ukrainian uni- versity students (ages 17 to 22) who h ad either lost a parent at the Maidan or in the war in Eastern Ukraine and/or are designated as displaced per- sons. The 35 semi - finalists were interviewed in June (in Ukraine). Our Social Welfare Chair, Oka Hrycak, and Dr. Halyna Hryn, president of the Shev chenko Society, selected the twelve students whom the UNWLA has committed to supporting. I was able to meet with six of these students who are
