32 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2018 The foods have varied from from Koshe r specialties, Mexican, Spanish and Venezuelan dishes, American Fish Fry sandwiches to Italian, Ukrainian, Greek and Irish desserts. The cultural immersion for children has included activities like origami, piñata making, Native American drum- ming, writing in the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet, and making Jewish dreidels. What was new at this year’s festival was that one of the local radio stations was broadcast- ing from the event! What was even better was that they were interviewing folks from the Reher Cen- ter , the food vendors, the performers and someone from each of the ethnic display booths. I was in- vited to be interview ed and was questioned about who we are, about our UNWLA connection, and about why we participate at the event. I explained that this is a pe rfect way for our branch to uphold two of our UNWLA mandates: to help preserve and protect our history, culture, and art forms and to share and educate others about them. I was also able to provide the interviewer with information about the local Ukrainian community in Ker- honkson and Poughkeepsie, about our Spiritual Heart at the Holy Trinity Church and our cultural Heritage Center at Soyuzivka, and about the vari- ous Ukrainian organizations, especially those for children like Plast and CYM. I even had a cha nce to plug the Ukrainian Museum in New York City and the Annual Ukrainian Cultural Festival in July at Soyuzivka! Finally, I explained that our UNWLA Branch 95 members agreed with the Reher Cen- ter’s goal of exposing children to the tapestry of in- ternation al heritages in an entertaining and in- formative way, and that’s the best reason why we are a part of this annual celebration. It is always fun to be a part of this day, but this time, the festival had a new dimension as it al- lowed us to reach out to folks who may not have attended this year or ever, but may be enticed by the radio interviews to check us out next year! A Note from the Editors: Guidelines for Submitting Articles to Our Life 1. Please send each article as Word document attachment via e mail to unwlaourlife@gmail.com. Please DO NOT type your article into the body of your email or send as a PDF file. 2. Identify your work . In the subject line of your email, please provide title or subject of the article you are submitting for publication and designate whether the article is in English or Ukrainian. (type in ENG or UKR to identify which). If applicable, include UNWLA Branch #. 3 . The Only Time Spelling Really Counts. We know a lot of people, but we do not know everyone and rely on our auth ors to provide correct spelling of first and last names of everyone mentioned in articles each time the names are mentioned. We don’t like to guess which version is correct. 4. Deadlines. Producing a bilingual monthly magazine is a complex matter that req uires extensive coop- eration and coordination between and among authors, photographers, editors, and Computoprint. Editing and layout take time and effort and it is for this reason that we set deadlines for materials to be published in any given month. Mate rials submitted later than the designated deadline wreak havoc on the production process and often create unnecessary additional work for all concerned. Please note that all materials (ar- ticles and photos) for any given issue of the magazine must be receiv ed by the editors by the 5th of the month preceding the month of publication. Materials received after this deadline may be bumped to the next issue. Last but not least : Please do not send identical articles to Our Life and any other publication simulta- ne ously as this constitutes a breach of professional courtesy. (In some cases, it is also illegal to do this as it may violate copyright laws.) If you feel the information you wrote about is important enough to share with a broader or different audience, ple ase write a separate and distinct article for each publication. Thank You for all your hard work and for your cooperation!
