20 WWW.UNWLA.OR G “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2018 War I, in his case, as a fierce Ukrainian patriot unwillin g to die for the country that was currently ruling Ukraine, Austro - Hungary. Once in Boston, my father became a leader in the Ukrainian community, but at the same time, became more enamored of the democracy of America and studied hard to become a citizen. From the time I was a child, my father told me to remember that I was 100% American and 100% Ukrainian and to be just as proud as he was to be both. One of his early activities was to lead classes to teach the people how to become citizens. He set up clas ses to teach the children the Ukrainian language and was always busy planning cultural events with the church choir singing both hymns and folksongs, the dancers displaying their twirls, kicks and knee bends, children reciting poetry. And always of course, speeches and lectures, almost always including him- self. The theme running through all of this was the dream that one day, Ukraine would regain its free- dom. When that day came in 1992, much to my sister’s and my sorrow, our father was no longer alive to r ejoice that his lifelong desire had at last come true. Today, we rejoice for him at this anniversary of this long, long awaited moment. _______________________________________________________________________ Леонід Полтава КИЯНКА ЧАСІВ МАЗЕПИ ( До фото на обкладинці « Одяг київської міщанки, Україна, XVIII ст .»
