“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2018 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 13 As the years went by, Mama’s charitable work expanded from helping poor people in Brazil to helping people living in our surrounding area and in Ukraine. In 2009, bolstered by a strong sup- port system within our church and parish, Mama founded The Charitable Program of St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Newark. On a local level, Mama and her army of volunteers deliver homemade meals to elderly and infirm members of our community, bringing not only food but also a bit of warmth and companionship to those who are lonely. Several times a year, the volunteers do- nate food to the St. John’s Food Kitchen in down- town Newark, helping to feed the hungry in our im- mediate area. After Hurricane Sandy devastated homes in the surrounding area, The Charitable Program reached out to several Ukrainian families who had suffered great losses. Thanks to the generosity of many parish- ioners and supporters within the United States, as well as an army of volunteers in Ukraine, The Charitable Program has been able to provide finan- cial assistance to wounded Ukrainian soldiers, or- phans, sick and handicapped children, the elderly, and the homeless in Kyiv and Lviv. It has also pro- vided assistance to Eastern Ukrainian refugees who found themselves displaced within their own country. This past year, Program volunteers called upon parishioners to become Angels of Mercy and to help provide financial assistance to people living in extreme poverty in Ukraine. Last week, when my co-worker Jillian greeted me with her usual, “It’s Grati-Tuesday. What are you grateful for?” my response wasn’t the one I had prepared. Instead, I told her, “I am grate- ful that our children want to be like my Mama when they grow up.” Our older daughter, Maya, sees her grandmother as the ultimate role model. She wants to be a humanitarian, like Babusia, and recently took it upon herself to hold a coat drive at her school. Maya collected nearly 1,000 pounds of warm winter clothing and has shipped 22 boxes to the needy in Ukraine. Our younger daughter, Mika, sells crafts to her classmates and online, donating the proceeds to the American Cancer Society. Both of our daughters understand how fortunate they are to be living in this country, with a roof over their heads, food on their plates, and clothes on their backs. Each of them, in her own way, is an Angel of Mercy, continuing the legacy of compas- sion and generosity that we have all learned from my Mama.
