The federal holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration o f Independence by the Continental Congress in 1776 , a declaration that proclaimed that the thirteen colonies founded and governed by the British Empire were now a sovereign nation . Ukraine cele- brates Independence Day on August 24 . It was on that day , in 19 91, that Ukraine’s Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, proclaimed that Ukraine was no longer a part of the Soviet Union but an independent, sovereign nation . Neither declaration of independence was recognized or accepted by the powerful empires that con- trolle d the freedom loving people who had expressed their desire and intention to be free of foreign dom- ination. The American colonies won their independence in 1783, after a long and bitter war against a mighty empire that was considered invincible. Ukraine, wh ose independence was recognized by the United Nations and by all civilized countries throughout the world almost two decades ago, continues to suffer from Russian colonial aspirations and territorial incursions. Today, July 4 is a national holiday that Am ericans commemorate with fireworks, parades, patriotic speeches, community gatherings, or family picnics. August 24 is also commemorated by Ukrainians around the world at picnics and similar gatherings. But the patriotic speeches are generally paired with prayer rather than fireworks, as well as with the fervent hope that the current struggles will end soon and that Ukraine will never again be subjected to foreign domination.
