The federation’s first President, Senator Olena Kysilewska, is seated front and cent er at the first World Congress of Ukrainian Women The World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations unites a spectrum of women’s or- ganizations pursuing civic, religious, cultural, educational, and humanitarian goals, addressing the unique chall enges that confront Ukrainian women worldwide by advocating for an independent and democratic Ukraine . WFUWO representatives participated in each of the UN World Conferences on Women — in Mexico City (1975), Copenhagen (1980), Nairobi (1985) and Beijing (1995) — raising the torture of Soviet women political prisoners and the plight of their children, as well as the suppression of national minorities in the USSR as issues violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Through its accredited represent ation at the United Nations, WFUWO promotes Ukrainian issues in this international forum, e.g. at the annual meetings of the UN Commission of the Status of Women, the celebrations of International Mother Language Days, and commemorations of the Holodomor G enocide. bringing vital assistance to Ukraine’s families. WFUWO member organizations conduct projects of significant social and humanitarian impact for Ukraine promoting the empowerment of all women in the international strug- gle to end Gender - Bas ed Violence (GBV). After 1991, WFUWO was on the forefront of raising awareness about the trafficking of women and the scourge of HIV/AIDS as major issues affecting Ukraine and its Eastern European neighbors. WFUWO has joined the annual 16 Days Campaign t o end GBV ( November 25 to December 10) organizing panel discussions, book presentations and featured speakers to raise community awareness on how to confront violence against women.
