“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2018 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 1 3 From the Editor : The March 2016 issue of Our Life included an article written by UNWLA Honorary President Anna Krawczuk. The article introduced UNWLA members and other readers to Ukrainian chess ph enome Mariya Muzychuk, who had recently been named the 15 th Women’s World Chess Cham- pion. The article also featured information about the chess champion’s family and a description about of a special ceremony hosted by Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko t o honor Ms. Muzychuk for her ac- complishment. In this month’s issue of Our Life we are proud to publish a feature article about Mariya Muzychuk’s older sister Anna, a gifted chess champion who was also a UNWLA Scholarship Program alumna , sponsored through her Master’s Degree by Taissa (Osinska) Decyk Meleshko . The article focuses on a brave and principled decision that has cost Anna Muzychuk two championship titles as well as the opportunity to vie for a new title and a hefty monetary reward. We applaud her courage and her prin- cipled stance against a dress code and a mindset that no woman should be subjected to. - tsc ____________________________________________________________ Women’s World Chess Champion Anna Muzychuk Delivers a Resounding Check m ate by Anna Krawczuk , UNWLA Honorary President and Scholarship Program Chair Chess G randmaster , World Champion , and UN- WLA Scholarship Program alumna, Anna Muzychuk recently took a stand for women’s rights and women’s honor by choosing to decline an invi- tation to defend her title by participating in a tour- nament to be held in Saudi Arabia , thus forfeiting her hard - won titles and awards: the Women’s Rapid Chess Championship and the Women’s World Blitz Chess Championship (both won in 2016). Writing on her Facebook page on December 23, 2017, Anna explained: “ In a few days I am go- ing to lose two World Champion titl es — one by one. Just because I decided not to go to Saudi Arabia. Not to play by someone’s rules, not to wear abaya, not to be accompanied getting outside, and alto- gether not to feel myself a secondary creature. . . . I am ready to stand by my principles an d skip the event, where in five days I was expected to earn more tha n I do in dozen s of events combined. All that is annoying but the most upsetting thing is that almost nobody really cares. That is a really bit- ter feeling, still not the one to change my o pinion and my principles. The same goes for my sister Ma- ria . . . I am really happy that we share this point of view. And yes, for t hose few who care — we'll be back!” Anna also posted an end - of - year message on December 31, 2017: “A nd here go my World Champ ion titles. I lost them, surrendering without the fight. Well, not quite. The fight is ever going. It is a fight for being myself. For my principles. For the dignity of the women and for the responsibility of [being] the top chess player . Anna Muzychu k in a photo from her Facebook page It is costly. But it is only deeds that count. Not just futile words and declarations. The stance my sister and I took can help chang e some important things in this world. Most proba- bly it won't change much, but we ar e all responsi- ble for our own actions. Thanks to all of you for the myriads of messages supporting us. Many of you claim our stance inspires you. I have to say that it works in both directions: your feedback inspires me. New year is around the corner. It w ill bring a chance to become the World Champion again, and I plan to prepare for these new challenges properly. Please, know that your support is im- portant to me. I wish every one of you a Happy New Year - inspire and be inspired! ” Congratulations Anna Muzychuk and Mari y a Muzychuk . Y ou have made us very proud!
