Given this history of unity, I believe it is appropriate that the UNWLA become a member of the planning com- mittee for the historic 100 th anniversary of SUU, especially as we come ever closer to celebrating our own centennial in 2025! I look forward to sharing planning committee details, as they evolve and de- velop, with our readers. Remembering Chornobyl: An Invitation to OL Readers In April of this year, Ukrainians will be commemorating a horrific episode in the history of Ukraine — the explosion of the Chor n obyl nuclear reactor on April 26, 1986. Since that time, we have published several articles, poems, stories, and commentaries on the Chornobyl disaster: its villains and its victims, its im- mediate and long - term political, ecological, and health implication s, how it changed Ukraine , and how it changed the world. In this year’s April issue, we hope to feature stories from our readers, specifically about personal and immediate responses to the horrific event and/or your involvement in relief efforts or in othe r related causes, including correcting media reports on the “Russian” nuclear disaster. Please type your story in a Word document and send via email to unwlaourlife@gmail.com. Please put Chornobyl Story by ( your first name and first letter of last name , e .g. Marta H.) in subject line of the email. At the end of your story (in the Word document), kindly include your full name and a telephone number where you can be reached. Absolute deadline for submission is March 10, 2018. (Please note that sooner is alwa ys better.) Our Cover Artist Sophia Zarytska was born in Poland in 1903 and began studying art in Lviv , at the school of renowned Ukrainian painter Oleksa Novakivsky . She continued her art studies in Prague from 1923 to 1928, initially at the Ukrainian School of Plastic Arts and later at the Prague Academy of Arts under K. Kratner. She moved to France in 1928, settling first in Paris and later moving to Chennevières - sur - Marne . Her work was exhibited and well received at the Salon des Indépendants in Par is as well as in galleries in Lviv, Berlin, and Prague . Sophia Zarytska’s focus was monumental fresco painting ; her preferred subjects were women and children. In 1964, Zarytska teamed up with Olena Kulchytska for a two - artist show organized by t he Ukraini an Free Academy of Sciences in the United States. Це неминуче огортає серце, коли відчуваєш, що за тебе не забули. І хоч ятряться рани душ наших, які не загоюються з часом, а віддаються частим болем, — все ж велика мудрість, філіґранна духовна праця та вміння знаходити порозуміння і розді ляти радощі та прикрості життя, постійна увага — і духовна, і матеріальна — цих двох пань і велика гармонія їх душ українських лікують наші душі, вселяють віру, скріплюють незалежність духу, зміцнюють силу і бажання вистояти проти темного та незрозумілого. Дякуємо, дорогі Союзянки, українська діаспоро, побратими та посестри, пані Маріянно і пані Лідо, шановна громадо Америки за Вашу чуйність, доброту, увагу, допомогу духовну і матеріальну, за Ваші святі намагання, щоб в кожному серці народився маленький Ісу с. Вітаємо Вас з Новим роком, Різдвом Христовим, з народженням Ісуса в кожному доброму серці, в кожній не байдужій душі, якими Господь щедро нагородив Вас і весь нарід український.
