“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 201 7 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 27 warned about the dyes (permanent, not edible) and were advised to bring aprons or work shirts to protect clothing from spilled or splashed dyes . We supplied handouts, refe rence material, cleaned eggs, hot water and vinegar to mix the dyes , and egg cartons to carry home the finished product . We also had egg blowers to help make th e job of removing egg whites and yolks easy. The class was intimate, com - prising fewer than a dozen students, a mix of men and women as well as older children, and this made it easy for us to provide more personal at- tention to each student . The parti - c ipants enjoyed hearing about the historical sig- nificance of the pysanky in pagan times and how t h is was later incorporated into our Christian be- liefs and customs and as an ethnic art form . Learning to “write” with wax on eggs was a new experience for the students; so was learning why we use a light to dark progression of dyes, and why we now empty th e egg shells after completing the process. I t was a very successful class . All of the students seem ed happy with everything we shared with them; they seemed to want to learn more. O ne thing we all agreed on was that this should be an all - day class because the extra time would give everyone a chance to take at least one egg through the entire pro- cess (blowing out, dy e- ing , and seal ing). With this in mind, we have already expanded plan s for our next class. In the meantime, we will see if the stu- dents who part icipated in our most recent class would like to come back for a follow - up class! (Photos by C. Gorham ) Photo by Marianna Crans.
