26 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 201 7 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ОКРУГ І ВІДДІЛІВ СУА Refreshing the Art of Pysanky by Marianna (Szczawinsky) Crans, Br. 95 Author conducting class. Being a Ukrainian daughter, I naturally learned how to make p ysanky as a child. Being an artist, it was right up my alley with learning about and ap- plyi ng the ancient patterns with the beeswax and kistka, using the dyes, working with the progres- sion of colors , and the n removing the wax to re- veal the glory of patterns of colors underneath. I felt like I had been indoctrinated into a secret cul- tural society ! A s I got older , I made pysanky spo- radically and then resurrected the skill when I joined the UNWLA as an adult and started doing demonstrations and teaching classes through lo- cal craft stores and at events hosted by other or- ganizations . Branch 95 (Hudso n Valley Region, N . Y . ) has long partnered with ARTS Mid Hudson (a nonprofit organization that promotes arts an d folk arts as an arm of N . Y . State Council for the Arts) to present various aspects of our culture, traditions and art forms. Earlier this year , we agreed to do a beginner p ysank a class at the ARTS Mid Hudson office gallery space. It had been sev- eral years since I had taught the class, and having learned a bit more about our culture ’ s design his- tory and having seen varied and modern trends evolving with p ysanky since then, I was concerned that my class material s might need some updat- ing. Fortunately, my original class notes were based on the fabulous Luchow Pysanky books, which are still a tried and true source of infor- mation that provides historic al references, p agan and Christian legends, Trypillian designs, as well as details on the actual mechanics of making pysanky, the meaning of the colors and symbols and the multitude of pattern layouts. Having a good detailed base to work from I just had to add information about using modern tools like the electric kistka, egg blowing tools, and a new style of sealers . I also decided to include information about n ew er trend s, like using o strich egg s for pysanky or creating p ysanky jewelry from ostrich egg sh ells. I was bolstered in these innovative en- deavors by my UNWLA sisters who were eager to help . Thus, a rmed with class notes, books, dis- plays and jars of p ysanky , Branch 95 held our first “refreshed” class. We had ordered kits for each student, each of wh om was asked to bring lidded jars for dyes and a box to carry them in. Students were
