“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 201 7 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 7 category: “our daughters’ age group,” the most recent immigration from Ukraine, and Members - at - Large. Presenters were Chrystyna Boyko, membership VP; Valentyna Tabaka, UNWLA Ex- ecutive Officer at Large; and Ivanka Oles nyckyj, Liaison for Members - at - Large (MALs). A review of issues of Our Life from decades ago reveals that membership has always presented a big challenge and recruiting interesting “young” women was always a topic of discussion. The team addressing this ch allenge at our annual meeting presented a new approach, and we invite you to follow their progress in your own Regional Councils and on the UNWLA’s Facebook page. The second very important discussion ad- dressed another pressing question: How should we divi de our resources (both volunteer hours and financial resources) between projects in Ukraine and here in the United States? The con- sensus reached was that we need a blend of both. Appeals from Ukraine are plentiful and our vari- ous committees choose wisely a nd prudently which of them should be supported ; Board mem- bers clearly stated , however, that we should also find and focus on projects addressing the needs and challenges of our own communities here in the United States. This topic was discussed at length a nd many ideas will be worked through by the various committees. Again, we invite you to follow their progress in the pages of Our Life and/or on Facebook. After Divin e Liturgy on Sunday morning, the meeting moved forward with other topics. Among the subje cts addressed were the following: How do we reinforce the role of our Regional Council Presidents and the Liaisons for our Branches - at - Large? A troubling trend is that tak- ing on a leadership role, whether it be on the Re- gional Council or branch level, is s een as a fright- ening commitment rather than as a healthy chal- lenge. So how do we help the second of these be- come the norm rather than the exception? An ini- tial report on our XXXI Convention was read (fi- nal to be compiled), and the status of UNWLA nursery s chools (svitlychky) was discussed. With state and federal regulations controlling a ctivities and administrative requirements, the nursery schools are facing a more costly and difficult road . Another topic discussed was the location of the XXXII UNWLA Conv ention (stay tuned, but note that the new by - laws have moved the Convention to the month of September 2020). Also on the agenda was the progress of the English - language UNWLA history book, which was presented in a report from Dr. Marta Kebalo, (a first ful l draft of the manuscript is expected by the end of 2017). Chair of the Bylaws Committee, I. Kurowyckyj , reported on the translation of the revised and new by - laws (which were unanimously approved by the XXXI Convention) into Ukrainian. It was decided to hold our annual meeting as soon as possible after the Convention because many of the Board members are new and their roles within the UNWLA family needed to be per- sonally “felt.” And our UNWLA family did indeed bond as, after a long day of work on Saturday , our members gathered round and sang and laughed for several hours. They walked away understand- ing that, yes, we have much work ahead of us, but that together, with teamwork, anything is possi- ble. I must note that our two Branches - at - Large Liaisons, (Oly a Sperkacz and Olya Czerkas) who both live in Florida, were unable to attend the National Board meeting due to Hurricane Ir- ma. We prayed for their safety. The Board unani- mously accepted the proposal of our Social Wel- fare Chair, Lidia Bilous (who was also u nable to attend our annual meeting) , to help the victims of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey. UNWLA Br anch 118 is based in Houston , and we have been constantly in touch with b ranch p resident Chrystia Bryndza .
