“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2017 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 5 Women’s Work: Honoring Women in the U.S. Military by Anna Krawczuk, UNWLA Honorary President The road to equality for American servicewomen has not been easy, but despite the barriers, we now have women generals and high-ranking servicewomen in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. We also have recognition and a WIMSA (Women in the Military Service for America) Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery that was officially dedicated in 1997. A Ukrainian American WWII US Navy Veteran, PN1 Doro- thy Sudomir Budacki of Ohio, was among the celebrants cutting the ribbon at that dedication almost 20 years ago. Dorothy, whose portrait is prominently displayed at the memorial, was a member of UNWLA Branch 12 in Ohio. Other UNWLA members who have served in the U.S. military are LTC Oksana Xenos, USA (Ret), LTC Inia I. Tunstall-Yevich, MD, USA (Ret), US Air Force Capt Daria H. Rusyn, USN LT Marta Biskup, DDS, USA Capt Maria Daniv, and LCDR Bodhanna Prynada Gott, USN (Ret) whose brother Iwan served in the US Army, and whose mother, Rose Prynada, was a Ukrainian Insurgent Army (УПА) veteran. Vira Homick, Lt Andrew Turo, USN Lieutenant Commander Stephanie Ann Homick Turo, and Joe Homick One recent addition to this honorable contingent is Stephanie Ann Homick Turo, USN, who, on January 3, 2017, was officially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander by Admiral Phil Davidson of U.S. Fleet Forces, at U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia. Her husband LT Andrew Turo and her parents Joe and Vira Homick shared this great moment. Stephanie (Nasha Stefcia) is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and has been serving as commissioned naval officer on active duty since May 25, 2007. She joined UAV Post 40, North Port, Florida, on July 2, 2009, where her grandfather, U.S. Army Korean war veteran John Homick was a member. Stefciu, you made us very proud and we congratulate you on your promotion. ___________________________________________________________________ Editor’s note : The author has been a member of the UNWLA since 1964.
