Delegates and guests quickly filled the confer- ence hall on Saturday morning, all wearing a dis- play of beautiful embroidered blouses and dress- es. This obligatory dress code for opening cere- monies is an impressive and inspiring tradition. A round of applause greeted those entering the hall in a predetermined order: flag bearers who car- ried the Regional Council and Branches at Large flags, members of the outgoing National and Ex- ecutive Board, Presidents of the Regional Coun- cils, Honorary Guests Orysia Sushko (President of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Or- ganizations–WFUWO), Filomena Procyk (Direc- tor of St. Olha Institute, Prudentopolis, Brazil), Wasyl Pazyniak (Verkhovna Rada Deputy and assistant to the UNWLA in supporting the victims of the war in Ukraine), Oryna Sokulska (VP of UNWL of Ukraine), Maria Furtak (UNWLA Rep- resentative in Ukraine for humanitarian aid and social welfare), UNWLA Honorary Presidents Iryna Kurowyckyj and Anna Krawczuk, and other honored guests and delegates. President Marian- na Zajac was the last to enter the plenary session hall and was greeted with the traditional bread and salt and flowers by members of the Conven- tion Committee. The national anthems of the United States and Ukraine were followed by the UNWLA hymn and prayer. The Honorary UN- WLA Presidents, President Zajac, and Regional Council Presidents lit the candles on the organiza- tional “Tree of Life” after which President Zajac officially announced the opening of the XXXI Convention of the UNWLA. Plenary Session, Welcome by Lidia Bilous, Chairperson of the Convention Committee. Convention Committee Chair Lidia Bilous warmly greeted the delegates and guests from the U.S., Ukraine, Canada, and Brazil, and thanked the members of the Convention Committee who had prepared and worked diligently to ensure the suc- cess of this event. Ms. Bilous also acknowledged sponsors and donors from various Ukrainian fi- nancial institutions, businesses and organiza- tions, as well as private individuals. “A sincere thanks to all those who came because they under- stand how important it is to participate in the Convention, to vote on important matters related to our organization, and to vote in a new Board which will lead us into the future,” she said. Ms. Bilous added that members of the Convention Committee were exceptional and truly exemp- lified the motto of the Convention. After these welcoming comments, members of the Conven- tion Committee were introduced; they came to the front of the hall, held hands, and loudly exclaimed in unison: “Our Membership—Our Strength!” Opening of the XXXI Convention. President Marianna Zajac officially opened the Convention and warmly greeted all the participants and ex- pressed her gratitude and respect to Honorary Presidents Iryna Kurowyckyj and Anna Krawczuk. After verification of the Convention Program and Rules of Procedure read by Oksana Farion (Audit- ing Committee Chair), Honorary Guests were in- troduced and Convention officers were elected. The committee to approve the minutes of the XXX Convention was appointed, and the reports of the outgoing National Board were approved. Approval of the Revised 2017 UNWLA By- laws. Serving as Chairwoman of the Bylaws Committee, Honorary President Iryna Kuro- wyckyj announced the members of the committee and shared the stages of work on the By-laws re- vision. She introduced Dr. Andrew Harasymyak, attorney and member of the By-laws committee, who presented the revised By-laws and stated that they complied with the laws of the United States and the State of New York. The issues of the Con- vention quorum and activities of specific organi- zational structures were addressed. The Bylaws also use the terminology and phrasing that adhere to the current terms and standards. Dr. Hara- symyak was hopeful that the proposed Revised Bylaws would become the basis for the cultivation of membership in the UNWLA. He also respond- ed to questions from the floor. The new 2017 By- laws were unanimously approved by the conven- tion delegates. Lunch. The Mistress of Ceremonies of the lunch- eon program, Katya Steciuk of Br. 56, introduced the Trio Maksymowych from Miami who per- formed familiar Ukrainian songs enjoyed by all. After the luncheon, there was a presentation of two segments of a film by author Natalia Godzhyk from Branch 111 of Los Angeles. Ms. Godzhyk ex- plained the motives for producing “Where Goes Ukraine . . . ” and the background work that was involved. The first segment showed the history of formation of a children’s camp “UNIZH” which is run totally by volunteers. The second segment underscored the importance of the Ukrainian lan- guage and the necessity to maintain its use. In concluding her presentation Ms. Godzhyk im- plored those present to cultivate their native tongue and teach it to their children.
