26 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2017 THE XXXI CONVENTION of the UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF AMERICA A chronicle of events and proceedings compiled by Larysa Topоlya and translated into English by UNWLA 1st Vice President Lydia Jachnycky May 26-29, 2017, Tampa, Florida. The XXXI UNWLA Convention was held in sunny Tampa, Florida, and was graciously hosted by members of Branches 17, 56, 124, and 136. The weekend was enriching and delightful, fostering new and inter- esting friendships and allowing the delegates and guests to learn firsthand about the activities of the UNWLA over the past three years. There were interesting presentations and valuable exchanges of ideas. We are grateful to the organizers for a wonderful and successful weekend. Friday, May 26, 2017: Registration. Mem- bers of the Branch 56 Registration Committee, chaired by Anne-Marie Susla, graciously greeted the delegates, members of the National Board, and guests. Our hosts were helpful in providing information about hotel registration and present- ed each participant with a tote bag filled with the UNWLA Convention Book, brochures promoting local Florida attractions, and various delightful and practical gifts. One hundred five official dele- gates from 36 UNWLA branches participated in the convention, along with UNWLA members and guests from Canada, Brazil, and Ukraine. Annual meeting of the National Board. UNWLA President Marianna Zajac and members of the National Board shared various activities and projects completed over the past three years. Information describing the intense preparation required to publish the Convention Book was pro- vided, and plans for the opening ceremonies of the XXXI Convention were also described. In ad- dition, the Revised 2017 UNWLA bylaws were introduced. The bylaws are in full compliance with the laws of the United States and the State of New York. There was also a discussion about the candidates nominated for Honorary Membership, the UNWLA’s most venerated award presented to deserving members who have served the or- ganization for many years. Proposed resolutions of the XXXI Convention were unanimously ap- proved. General duties of the organization and direction of its activities were underscored, and resolutions regarding the duties of the various chairpersons of the Standing Committees for the next three years were proposed. At the end of the meeting, President Marianna Zajac summarized the work of the National Board for the past three years and thanked everyone for their cooperation and successful achievements for the good of the organization. Procedures of the UNWLA; Your Ques- tions – Our Answers. Moderators Christine Boyko (Vice President and Membership Chair), Orysia Zinycz (Liaison for Branches at Large), Vera Kushnir (Financial Secretary), and President Zajac reviewed UNWLA organizational proce- dures, including protocols for leading meetings and elections, voting requirements, writing minutes and correspondence via email, offering practical advice and answering questions from the floor. Pre-Convention Program and Reception Celebrating our Members: A Meeting of Friends from across the United States. On Friday, May 26, 2017, a pre-Convention program and reception was led by moderators, Roksolana Misilo (VP and Public Relations Chair) and Olya Czerkas (Liaison for Branches at Large). The re- ception presented a wonderful opportunity to meet members from various branches throughout the U.S. as well as guests from Canada, Brazil, and Ukraine. This event confirmed the Conven- tion motto, “Our Membership—Our Strength.” During this event, a group photograph of those attending their very first Convention was taken; it was a pleasant surprise to see so many “first tim- ers.” An interesting “UNWLA trivia” quiz about the history of the UNWLA was organized and pre- sented by the members of the evening’s program committee. An illustrative and interesting Power- Point presentation focusing on the “Women of Kozachyna” was given by Roma Lisovich (Ukrain- ian National Association Treasurer and UNWLA member). This most thought-provoking and en- tertaining presentation underscored the unique lives and traditions of the women-kozachky and their support of the kozaky. It revealed that the women of this era wielded more power than imag- ined!
