“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2017 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 11 responsibilities, came to these meetings with their children because they could not find babysitters. Ole- na Lototska comments that the strong desire to come to these meetings, in search of a deep connection with other Ukrainian women of similar roots and backgrounds, was the motivator. Can we draw parallels with these two commentaries and our assignment for today ? Does the fu- ture of the Ukrainian diaspora of women depend on us? And will the deep connection among Ukrainian women continue to bind us? During the 90th anniversary of the UNWLA, I posed the following questions in my speech: "How is it that an organization that unites women of Ukrainian descent in the United States can exist, survive, flourish, transform, achieve such beautiful goals, while uniting four generations of Ukrainians?" I suggest that the reasons this can and does happen are because the UNWLA embodies devotion, dedication, patriotism, compassion, sympathy; because the UNWLA is a reflection of the Ukrainian soul, the Ukrainian heart, and Ukrainian culture; because the UNWLA gives its members a sense of belonging, realization, pride and solidarity, as well as sociability. Understanding the deeper reasons of our long-term successes can better prepare us to move for- ward. Our projects and work are always based on current events in Ukraine. We do not know how events in Ukraine will develop, but our social welfare projects will reflect those events whatever they may be. But, at the same time, I propose that we consider and research the possibility of projects here in the United States. At the last Annual Meeting of our National Board in October 2016, we actively dis- cussed this topic, and we will continue these discussion with the newly elected Board. During this 2016 meeting, many innovative ideas for encouraging new membership were proposed. The spectrum of interests of contemporary Ukrainian women are broad; we must and will reflect on new ways for the further development of our organization in order to capture those interests. How do we interest our daughters and daughters-in-law? This question has been repeatedly asked throughout the 92 years of UNWLA’s existence—on the pages of Our Life , at conventions, in con- vention books, in minutes of meetings, and at meetings themselves. We will reach out to these younger American women, knowing that ultimately the Ukrainian soul joins us, regardless of the profession we’re in, the language we speak, or where we live. In closing, I would like to throw out a thought to our delegates and members: let us not only react to the spirit and the needs of the times, LET US TOGETHER BECOME VISIONARIES! Thank you! Glory to Ukraine!
