2 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2017 The fundamental beliefs that education is key to a strong and successful society and that the youth is the future of that society form the very foundation of the UNWLA Scholarship/Children-Student Sponsorship Program. The dedication of the volunteers who translate this belief into action is boundless and selfless. And it is the generosity of the Program’s sponsors and supporters that enables the work of the volunteers to become a reality. Since its founding in 1967, the UNWLA Scholarship Program has evolved into the pride and joy of the UNWLA. From all the written accounts given by UNWLA Presidents, Scholarship Committee Chairs, or volunteers visiting the countries that receive such scholarships, one can only marvel at how many lives this fine program has touched. The Scholarship Program sees each applicant as an individual human being, shaped by his or her own personal and special circumstances. Priority is given to orphans and underprivileged children. Each recipient has his or her own story of difficulties or challenges faced while striving to better himself or herself through education. The success stories are many—the respect and gratitude of the graduates to the Scholarship Program as they develop their life plans and careers are both touching and rewarding and are documented in the booklets compiled for the 35 th and 40 th anniversaries of the program. We look forward to reading the latest compilation of the program’s history in the upcoming anniversary booklet. It is with deep sorrow but tremendous gratitude that we remember our long-time Scholarship Program Chair Maria Polanskyj who passed away in December 2015. Besides carrying out the detailed and complicated work that chairs of the UNWLA’s Scholarship Program oversee and direct, she was the embodiment of the sincere caring and deep concern for each scholarship recipient. At a time in Ukraine’s history when the country’s youth, fueled by high ideals, is fighting for the future of their country, we can feel confident that the Scholarship Program has contributed to this positive development. The Program must continue on this path! Cultivating, protecting and honoring the Ukrainian language has always been an integral part of the UNWLA’s goals and is indeed upheld in this particular UNWLA program. As noted in reports and articles previously published in our magazine, UNESCO celebrates International Mother Language Day (IMLD) on February 21 every year. As part of this annual celebration, the Ukrainian Permanent Mission held its own annual celebration of the Ukrainian language on Friday, March 10, 2017, and the UNWLA participated in its planning committee. The program included a keynote address by Dr. Marta Bohachevsky Chomiak (honorary UNWLA member); a clip from the film Julia Blue ; a children’s musical performance, and readings from the works of women poets (both Ukrainian and Crimean Tartar). One of the two Ukrainian performers in this poetry recitation was Lesya Topolia, our own Ukrainian editor of Our Life . An article about this event will be published in next month’s issue of our magazine. Heartfelt Congratulations to the Scholarship/Children-Student Program on its 50 th anniversary. We thank each of the Program’s past and present Chairs and volunteers for their commitment. Thank you to all donors for their confidence in the UNWLA and their generous support!
