30 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2016 STUFFED! by Marianna Szczawinsky Crans Branch 95 Varenyky Display On Saturday, May 14, 2016, ARTS Mid Hudson presented a program at the Adriance Memorial Library in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Entitled “STUFFED!” the program was billed as an interactive multicult- ural event about stuffed, rolled, and filled tradi- tional foods. It was free to the public and featured the ethnic “stuffed” foods of India, Japan, China, and Ukraine. At the event, the Hindi group presented their Pani Puri, delicate puffs with a myriad of fillings and toppings creating a tasty and visually pleasing presentation. The Japanese contingent demonstrated how to fill, roll, and cut their intricate and delicious Futomaki, a vegetable sushi offered with a variety of accompanying sauces. The Chinese offered a tasty steamed filled rice called Zhongi and rice dough Dimsum dumplings with ginger dipping sauces. UNWLA Branch 95, Mid Hudson Valley region, New York, participated in this event and pre- sented several variants of Ukraine’s famous comfort food, varenyky. Our presentation included potato and cheese and mushroom and sauerkraut varenyky tossed with caramelized onions and butter and topped with sour cream. We also provided displays on Ukrainian culture and instructions on how to make varenyky. Recipes from the UNWLA website were handed out along with illustrations on how to fill and shape and seal the dough for cooking. There was a great deal of interest from the local community; attendees enjoyed the displays, watching the hands on-demos, learning about various cooking techniques. The participating groups es- pecially enjoyed sampling each other’s offerings and asked detailed questions on creating them. At the end of the two-hour event, Branch 95 members were delighted to discover that there was no food left to sample! We took that as a sign of a very successful event: Not only did we and numerous guests attending get to sample a variety of international culi- nary delights, we also shared our universal love for food, and shared even more about our respective ethnic cultures with our community.
