28 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2016 Branch 30 Hosts Lecture by Professor Alexander Motyl by Nadia Liteplo Professor Alexander Motyl speaking on “The Current Sit- uation in Ukraine and Russia” UNWLA Branch 30 of Yonkers, New York, whose patroness is actress and play director Lidia Kryshelnytska, hosted a lecture by Dr. Alexander Motyl, professor of political science at Rutgers University. The event, which took place at St. Mi- chael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church Hall on Sunday, March 13, 2016, opened with “World Support Ukraine,” a song written by Diana Mess (a Ukrainian girl who lives in Great Britain) and sung by Alexander Boyko (son of Branch 30 member Lesya Boyko). Nadia Liteplo, president of Branch 30, then introduced the multitalented Dr. Motyl, who is not only an academic but is also an artist, a poet, and the author of six academic books, numerous articles, and eight novels, including Sweet Snow, Fall River, Whiskey, and Vovochka . Dr. Motyl’s lecture was on “The Current Situation in Ukraine and Russia” and was deliv- ered in Ukrainian. A specialist on Ukraine, Russia, and the former Soviet Union, Professor Motyl opened with a paradox, noting that even though Ukraine's economic situation (especially in West- ern Ukraine) is currently better than it was several years ago and although Russia's economy has been adversely affected by the falling price of oil and by Western sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine’s President Poroshenko has a low popular approval rating (below 30%) whereas Russia’s President Putin has a high approval rating (about 90%). Professor Motyl then addressed the ongo- ing conflict in Eastern Ukraine. While acknowledg- ing that there does not appear to be any imminent solution to the current and ongoing conflict, Motyl outlined an interesting potential long-term strat- egy of dealing with Ukraine’s Eastern regions, a strategy based on economics rather than on war- fare. Specifically, he explained that by creating a more desirable economic environment in Ukraine at large, the country will be creating an environ- ment that the Eastern regions will want to be a part of. In presenting this idea and its potential im- plications, Professor Motyl emphasized that Kyiv must continue to implement policies that will fur- ther the already improving economic well-being of all its people. The program ended with a stimulating question and answer period and a book signing by Dr. Motyl. Light refreshments were provided by Branch 30 members. The event took place in con- junction with a bake sale and the sale of Easter supplies, and donations were designated for the UNWLA War Victims Fund. До уваги авторів і дописувачів!
