2016 Taras Shevchenko Day munity. At this year’s Shevchenko commemoration, three children gave readings and presentations, one played piano, another played violin, and several participated in a Shevchenko themed skit pre- sented at the Ukrainian Cultural Center. Honoring Shevchenko, the community also responded to current events in Ukraine, focusing on the plight of Ukraine’s female fighter pilot who was wrongfully imprisoned by the Russian government and has recently been sentenced to long years of hard labor. Many of those who came for the Taras Shevchenko commemorative program carried signs reading “Free Nadiya Savchenko!” Support for Ukrainians Traveling Through Phoenix The Ukrainian community of Phoenix, Arizona, has also been very busy watching films related to current events in Ukraine. One was about the defenders of the Donetsk Airport; another was Oleksandr Chub’s “Once Upon a Mine.” Donations were requested at each film showing, and the funds collected were used (respectively) to help a recovering Ukrainian soldier biking across America and to film director Chub to help with production costs. These events were organized by Yuri and Olena Melnyk. At least 50 people attended each film screening, including many new Ukrainian immigrants to Arizona. Branch 3 Tea Luncheon Branch 3 hosted a Tea Luncheon, which was held on April 24, 2016, to honor the 40 th anniversary of the Ukrainian Museum in New York and to raise funds to help replenish our treasury. One of the projects we hope to focus on in the coming year is to improve the display and preservation of the costume collection displayed in the mini-museum in the Ukrainian Cultural Center. Our luncheon, attended by about 50 peo- ple, included a short film about the National Ukrainian Museum, opening remarks in Ukrainian and Eng- lish by Branch 3 President Olena Melnyk, and a prayer of thanksgiving offered by Father Mazepa for the delicious food that was served at the event. Many beautiful items were donated for a silent auction, and the proceeds from the auction were gratifying. The event also included a special tribute to our beloved and much admired past president Chrystia Boyko who received several gifts and sincere commendation for her long years of dedicated service as president of UNWLA Branch 3. ___________________________ Діяльність 62-го Відділу СУА ім.
