“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2016 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 25 Saint Nicholas Day Many children and their parents participated in the St. Nicholas celebration held in December 2015. Com- munity children presented an enactment of the traditional customs for the Ukrainian Christmas dinner (Sviat Vechir). The children explained the reason for the extra place set at the Christmas Eve table and for the straw laid under the table. The highlight, of course, was the arrival of St. Nicholas who brought and distributed gifts. It was fun seeing the children enjoying their gifts and sharing this good feeling with oth- ers. Senator McCain at Ukrainian Orthodox Church with members of Ukrainian Com- munity Phoenix Area Ukrainians Meet with Arizona’s Senator John McCain In the fall of 2015, Ukrainians from Tucson hosted a meeting with Arizona Senator John McCain. Ukrainians in Phoenix decided to host a similar event, so more Phoenix area Ukraini- ans could attend. Senator McCain gra- ciously accepted our invitation, and the meeting was held at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in January 2016. The church was filled to capacity (about 80 people), and many of those attending wore their Ukrainian embroidered blouses and shirts. Branch 3’s President Chrystia Boyko and several young children greeted Senator McCain with the tradi- tional special bread and salt on an embroidered cloth and a bulava (mace). Senator McCain, in turn, con- firmed his continued support for the Ukrainian people and for the nation of Ukraine. Representing the community, Phoenix resident Victor Szwez thanked the Senator for coming to meet with Phoenix Ukrain- ians and especially for his support for Ukraine. Challenges and Goodbyes Almost all profits from events hosted in 2015 and all donations solicited were used to help the wounded soldier Volodya Hera and his father (who had come from Ukraine to be with his son) or for humanitarian aid packages to Ukraine. At the end of the year, strengthened both physically and emotionally, Volodya left Arizona and returned to Ukraine with his father. A New Year’s Eve Dance was held in mid-January 0f 2016, but few people attended. Several of our branch members were sick, so our annual meeting was held a month later than usual. When we did finally meet, there were twelve members! All meeting guidelines and protocols were strictly followed. Reports were presented, new officers were voted in, and new committee members were appointed. After hearing the report of the branch treasurer, we were forced to face the fact that our small UNWLA branch needed to take a time-out on mailing packages to Ukraine until more money could be raised to replenish the treas- ury. Olena Melnyk was elected branch president. After serving as president of Branch 3 for nearly 30 years, Chrystia Boyko has acquired a vast knowledge. Although no longer president, Chrystia, in her current po- sition as 1 st vice president, will be on hand to counsel Olena whenever the need arises. Taras Shevchenko Day Michael Dydyk, long-time president of the Phoenix branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of Amer- ica, who was home-bound with medical issues, asked that we carry on with community work and especially requested that we hold our annual Taras Shevchenko Commemoration event in March. Chrystia Boyko, though no longer president of Branch 3, had been serving as acting president of UCCA since Mr. Dydyk could not. Mrs. Boyko also helps plan most events presented by the children of the Ukrainian com-
