12 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2016 Several other speeches followed, including the impassioned appeal of Ms. Adi Roche, founder of the Chornobyl Children Charity, who requested that the international body support the creation of a global fund to meet the needs of those affected by Chornobyl and also requested that April 26 be of- ficially recognized as UN Chornobyl Day. Vo- lodymyr Yelchenko, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UN, reminded those present that the nuclear power plant was under the direct jurisdiction of the Soviet authorities at the time of the disaster. Not- ing that humanity had not yet witnessed a catas- trophe of such enormity, he stated that this tragedy could be compared in scale and in scope to the Ho- lodomor (Famine of 1932–1933), World War II, and today’s Russian aggression in Ukraine. Following this assembly, Ambassador Yelchenko invited guests to attend the dedication of a Chornobyl themed photo exhibit. Leaders of the Ukrainian American community in the NYC area were given the opportunity to attend this sol- emn UN commemoration. Together we honored those Ukrainians who died as well as those who continue to be plagued by the effects of this nuclear catastrophe. Benefit luncheon for the Ukrainian Catholic University On Sunday, May 15, a benefit luncheon for the Ukrainian Catholic University was held at The Manor in West Orange, New Jersey. The luncheon program prepared for the occasion included the following notation: “With the unexpected onset of war in 2014, a crucial challenge facing Ukraine has become the modernization of the field of physical rehabilitation. In response to this challenge . . . a new initiative, The Rehabilitation Center, with a related course of study and training, was under- taken at UCU in 2015.” During the benefit luncheon, the UN- WLA’s contribution and generosity towards this UCU program was gratefully acknowledged. (As previously noted in May’s issue of Our Life , the UNWLA has become a benefactor of the Mental Health Institute at the Rehab Center . This year our organization has donated $100,000 to this worthy endeavor; we will be adding to this with donations of $10,000 for each of the next four years. Speakers at the event underscored the im- portance of UCU and its diverse offerings and un- dertakings. Dr. Yaroslav Hrytsak, Professor, De- partment of History at UCU, explained his convic- tion that the university provides an environment that will instill high values in the young people cur- rently part of UCU’s student body, a generation of future Ukrainian leaders. Dr. Boris Lushniak, retired Rear Admiral and former U.S. Acting Surgeon General (July 2013 through December 2014), spoke emphati- cally of the need for such a university, especially one of such great vision! Dr Lushniak then invited the UNWLA president to the podium to say a few words about the organization’s commitment to the Mental Health Institute. During my brief remarks, I underscored that building on the success of the UNWLA Women’s Studies Lectureship established
