2 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2016 UNWLA Partners with Healers and Musicians by UNWLA President Marianna Zajac The UNWLA’s partnership with Doctors Collabo- rating to Help Children and with Dr. Gennadiy Fu- zaylov, an ongoing project that began in 2012, has focused on the annual Shriners Missions to Lviv and provides examination and surgeries for scores of children from all of Ukraine who are suffering from burn injuries, support for children accepted to Boston’s Shriners Hospital for their free treat- ment, as well as support for a burn prevention campaign in Lviv. Burn/scald injuries are the most prevalent of all types of injuries sustained by young children in Ukraine, and most of these involve hot liquids and occur in kitchens. It has been con- firmed that the most common cause is parents’ lack of understanding of the physical and psycho- logical development of children. Once a child has suffered 2nd or 3rd degree burns, that child will re- quire lifelong and costly treatment. Dr. Fuzaylov gathered and processed statistics with his Ukrain- ian partners from 2012 to 2015, and the educa- tional project formally began in January 2016. In Lviv, this project has been implemented with the support of the Departments of Health of the Lviv Regional and City Administrations in conjunction with the City Community Hospital No 8. The UN- WLA has supported this extremely important pro- ject with a billboard project that comprises 7 bill- boards posted throughout Lviv for 3 months (No- vember 2016 through January 2017) with informa- tional posters displayed on trolleys and trains and with an informational event held in Lviv’s Khmel- nytsky Park on August 20, 2016. The UNWLA’s funding of financial support for the parental edu- cational effort is clearly acknowledged in print. The ultimate goal is to increase awareness and de- crease the high rate of preventable burn injuries in Ukraine. Poster sample displayed throughout trolleys and trains beginning September 2016. Tent and UNWLA banner as part of Burn Prevention awareness event in Khmelnytsky Park in Lviv (August 20, 2016). Informational materials available during awareness event held on August 20, 2016. _______________________ Billboard (sample) launched and displayed November 2016 thru January 2017 throughout the city of Lviv and its outskirts (7 billboards, 3 satellite boards).
