“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2016 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 25 Branch 88, Philadelphia Regional Council, presents Stories for Every Season by Petrusia Sawchak, Br. 88 Press Secretary Stories for Every Season A new children’s book, Stories for Every Season , published by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc. (UNWLA), Branch 88 of the Philadelphia Regional Council, was launched at the Christmas Bazaar held at the Ukrainian Ed- ucational and Cultural Center (UECC) in Jenkin- town, Pennsylvania, on December 13, 2016. In this book, Christine R. Shwed, who served as UNWLA Education Committee Chair from 2005 to 2011, compiled, arranged, and de- signed a collection of original enchanting stories based on Ukrainian folktales and traditions. Ms. Shwed also created follow-up exercises/activities developed to promote language and other learning skills. The stories were originally used to enrich the curriculum of UNWLA’s branch-run svitlychky (preschools) with new and lively materials. Besides providing good stories, these tales also taught im- portant educational skills to young children. According to Ms. Shwed, “The stories and exercises in this book help children acquire higher order thinking skills and further develop their in- nate creativity through storytelling and play. The materials presented can also be used to teach a number of different skills taught in preschool such as recognizing colors, numbers, counting, recog- nizing and naming animals and birds as well as concepts like hibernation, metamorphosis, fruits and vegetables, the universe, body parts, feelings, and friendship. They also show and promote our beautiful Ukrainian traditions.” The stories, written by various authors, were previously featured in the UNWLA’s monthly magazine Our Life and in Veselka ( The Rainbow) , published by the Ukrainian National Association between 1947 and 1962. Among the authors were Hanna Chornobytska, Ivan Kernytsky, Nina Mudryk-Mrytz, Nina Narkevych, Roman Zavado- vych, and Ivanna Savytska, to name just a few. They wrote these delightful tales between 1944 through 1972 to entertain and instruct children of Ukrainians who were displaced from their home- land after World War II. It was a creative way to instill Ukrainian traditions in these children. Ms. Shwed designed the colorful pages and brought the tales to life again in the pages of Our Life , enticing young children to look and read. Now these Ukrainian-language stories are available in book form for a new generation of youngsters to enjoy with their parents, grandparents, and friends. It’s a collector’s item to be enjoyed and val- ued for years to come, guaranteed to delight young readers and parents alike. Copies of the book were available at the UECC’s Christmas Bazaar and were presented to individuals in appreciation for a $15 donation for ATO (Anti-Terrorist Operation) in Eastern Ukraine to help orphans and families adversely impacted by the aggression of Russian invaders on Ukrainian lands. Complimentary copies of Stories for Every Season will also be available for anyone making a $15 or greater donation to ATO through Branch 88. If interested, please mail your request along with a check made payable to Branch 88, UNWLA, Inc., in the amount of $19 ($15 for dona- tion to ATO and $4 for shipping costs) to Branch 88, UNWLA, Inc. c/o Olga Jakubowska, 711 E.
