“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2016 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 13 ing or returning from the war, offering them phys- ical and psychological support. We were also very fortunate to spend some time with Bishop Stepan Menjuk (whose diocese includes the regions of Do- netsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Dnipro) and Bishop Brian Bayda who was visiting from Sas- katchewan, Canada. Bishop Menjuk shared the challenges the church is facing because of the on- going war in eastern Ukraine. After a very full day, we left for Dnipro. Cemetery of the Unknown Soldier in Zaporizha August 28 . In Dnipro, we visited three hospitals: the regional Burn Center, the Military Hospital, and the regional Mechnykova Hospital. In all three of these institutions, we were escorted by hospital personnel, visited the wounded from bed to bed, tried to offer words of support by underscoring that the diaspora is aware of their sacrifices, appre- ciates them, and is eager to support them. For ob- vious reasons, the 27th and 28th were very difficult and emotional for us. Once again, we visited the Cemetary of the Unknown Soldier in Dnipro (as we did in Zaporizhia), laid flowers at the monument, requested a panakyda honoring the fallen. Before our return to Kyiv, we spent some time at the Dnipro train depot, speaking with extraordinary individuals who manage and run a volunteer cen- ter right in the train station. The importance of the volunteers’ mission and their importance was once again made very clear. Visiting wounded soldier in Dnipro regional burn center August 30. After a free day in Kyiv, Roksolana Misilo and I participated in a live TV interview on “Tsentralnij Kanal,” an independent Ukrainian station. This was followed by an in-depth radio in- terview. We also met with Oleksander Savenko, Tsentralnij Kanal’s president and a renowned and honored Ukrainian journalist and community ac- tivist. During this meeting, I had the opportunity to discuss the UNWLA’s multifaceted work in Ukraine and in the United States. Our day ended with a tour of Mezhyhiria, ousted president Yanu- kovych’s palatial estate. The realization of the abuse of power here following our days in Za- porizhia and Dnipro made the divide even more dramatic. August 31. Return to New York City. Wishing you peace, joy, and all the best this Christmas season. May this time of giving and spending time with family and friends bring you joy that lasts throughout the coming year !
