“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 15 Marianna Zajac speaking at Savchenko rally, July 30, 2015 ______________________________ Since her capture, Nadiya Savchen- ko’s cause and campaign have won support from the Obama administration, foreign governments, human rights organizations, pro-democracy groups, and thousands upon thousands of Internet petitioners worldwide. But, here we are today, gathered once again in solidarity to protest Nadiya’s unjust cap- tivity, as she sits in a high security prison in Rostov, Russia, and as she faces a closed and doomed trial whose outcome has been pre- determined by the Kremlin. The trial began today. She is being prosecuted despite her diplomatic immunity. Embassy staff from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Norway, Austria, and the European Union arrived to observe today’s proceedings, but they were not allowed to attend the opening of the trial. How ludicrous! How tragic! At this time when crises and dangerous scenarios engulf the world, it is imperative that we con- tinue to shout out and remind one and all of the human rights injustices imposed by Russia on the Ukrainian people! In this particular case, the flagrant injustice imposed on Lt. Nadiya Savchenko— former Ukrainian Air Force pilot, the only female soldier among Ukrainian peacekeeping troops in Iraq, a member of the volunteer Aidar Battalion at the time of her capture, and currently a member of Ukraine’s Parliament. Is it possible that in the 21st century, in this world of modern communication and social media— at a time when information is so readily available—that President Putin has turned a deaf ear to the world’s outcry? It is indeed! Given President Putin’s hostility to the rule of law, to democracy, and to human rights, as has been proven by Russia’s ongoing support of the terrorist war in Ukraine, by its intensive and extensive campaign of disinformation and propaganda about this war, it should be no surprise that the charges brought against Savchenko are utterly unjustified. George Orwell, the English novelist, journalist and critic whose work is marked by its great atten- tion to social justice, stated that “[t]he further society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it!” The further President Putin drifts from the truth, the more he hates those who speak it! The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America has been a staunch defender of human rights since its inception in 1925. We have continued to do so during this past year by participating in all the actions I mentioned previously and by calling on our national membership and friends to stand up in defense of Nadiya Savchenko’s human rights. As we look at recent pictures of Nadiya, with the gaunt profile of her pretty face, let us remember that in her 34 years of life she has a history of fighting for what she believes in! Let us join forces to con- tinue fighting for the freedom of Nadiya Savchenko and allow her to continue fighting for her beliefs! She is a symbol of the struggle which Ukraine faces today! She epitomizes bravery and patriotism. At the bottom of a drawing completed by Nadiya on February 10, 2015, while she attended one of her outrageous court dates, she wrote: Ukrainkoyu ya narodylasia! Ukrainkoyu ya i pomru!! Translation: I was born a Ukrainian! And I will die a Ukrainian! Slava Ukraini!
