14 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2015 July 18 – Quarterly Ukrainian Museum Board meeting followed by Museum Executive meeting. July 30 – The New York City Branch of UCCA and the Organization in Defense of Four Free- doms organized a rally of solidarity to protest the illegal imprisonment of Nadiya Savchenko and other Ukrainian prisoners. The rally took place at the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation in New York City. The President of the UNWLA was invited to speak. (Please see the text of the speech below.) The rally was attended by other UNWLA Executive Committee members— Roksolana Misilo and Mariya Andriyovych. The latest news on Savchenko’s trial is that the hear- ing is postponed because the court is considering Nadiya’s lawyers’ appeal to have the trial relocat- ed from the Rostov region to Moscow. We contin- ue to keep abreast of this unsettling situation and look for methods to keep working towards Nadi- ya’s release. August 1 – UNWLA Executive Board meeting at headquarters in New York City. August 6 – UNWLA President received an invi- tation from the Ukrainian Mission in Washington, D.C., to attend a meeting with the newly appoint- ed Ambassador, Valeriy Chaly. Mr. Chaly present- ed on his goals as Ambassador and also touched upon how our diaspora organizations can help in spreading the most current news on Ukraine by contacting their representatives. The political, economic, and security situations in Ukraine were Nadiya Savchenko declaration at the trial. addressed in summary. The Ambassador paid special attention to Ukraine’s struggle against the Russian aggression and to Ukraine’s and diaspo- ra’s efforts to counter Russia’s information war against Ukraine. August 10 – The Ukrainian Museum Executive Board meeting. We are ready to take on the many chal- lenges facing our organization and diaspora in general in the fall of 2015. However, as we con- tinue to support Ukraine and its citizens, we must also turn our attention to our own organization and its needs: what is required for us to continue to be strong and to flourish? This is a question which we should not neglect! A Speech Delivered by UNWLA President Marianna Zajac at the New York City Rally Protesting the Illegal Imprisonment of Nadiya Savchenko and Other Ukrainian Prisoners Dear fellow Americans! It is with a heavy heart but with great determination and unified voices that we gather today in front of the Russian Federation Mission in New York City to once again appeal for Nadiya Savchenko’s release and freedom. She was kidnapped by Russian separatists and has been held on trumped-up charg- es for more than a year. She fought this injustice with a brave 83-day hunger strike which she ended due to very severe health issues. We gather here—after a multitude of worldwide demonstrations in defense of Nadiya Savchenko were organized and held since the day she was taken prisoner; —after thousands of letters of appeal to U.S. and European government officials, and to United Nations commissions were sent out by Ukrainian Americans, by their friends and supporters; —after meetings were held with Nadiya Savchenko’s lawyers in an attempt to understand the Russian non-transparent so-called “legal” system; we gather here—after personally listening to emotional pleas from Nadiya’s stoic mother, pleas for her beloved daughter’s release.
