“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 13 The lazy, hazy days of summer were actu- ally quite busy for the UNWLA as meetings, gath- erings, and various other events took place. Please allow me to share a few of these to give you an idea about the flurry of activity in the Ukrainian community, regardless of the calendar dates. June 27 – The UNWLA held its monthly Execu- tive Board meeting at its headquarters in New York City. We continued to plan for our organiza- tion’s 90th anniversary celebration scheduled for the weekend of October 16-18, during the annual UNWLA National Board meeting. Please see the “Save the Date” on page 3. June 28 – A conference call with the Presidents of UNWLA Regional Councils and UNWLA Exec- utive Board members took place this Sunday evening. The Executive Board is striving to make this a regular event to keep the lines of communi- cation open with its leadership. June 29 – The President and Honorary Presi- dent Iryna Kurowycky, as well as other UNWLA members, attended the Ukrainian Constitution Day at the Ukrainian Institute in New York City. This event was organized by the UN Diplomatic Corps to commemorate Ukrainian Constitution Day and also to showcase young Ukrainian talent. As Yuriy Sergeyev, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Nations, stated in his opening remarks, “...Fundamental Law has been the legal basis for Ukraine’s statehood, development of the society and strengthening of democracy... We fully realize that the constitutional reform is an objective ne- cessity aimed at guaranteeing the further devel- opment of our country, its full integration into the European community, and the circle of successful countries of the world.” Following the comments by Tamara Olexy, President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, Judge Bohdan Futey was introduced. (Please see Judge Futey’s condensed speech on page 16.) Judge Futey is one of the consultants of Ukraine’s 1996 Constitution and was recently appointed member of the Con- stitutional Commission by President Poroshenko. Following the speeches, the artistic portion of the program, titled “Transforming Shared Vision into Action for Peace,” commenced, with a special concert featuring young talents from Ukraine. Three pianists from the Lysenko Special- ized Music School in Kyiv inspired and moved the audience with their performances. July 11 – The Ninth Annual Cultural Festival was held at Soyuzivka, the UNA resort in the Catskills, during the weekend of July 10-12. UNWLA Vice President of Public Relations, Roksolana Misilo, organized an informational table and coordinated our membership to man the table. The organizers were in the process of gathering current infor- mation on our projects when it became crystal clear just how much we have been accomplishing and how much effort has been expended! It was very heartening to discover that more volunteers than needed have signed up! The volunteers gave of their time cheerily as they chatted with other volunteers whom they had never met before, as well as with festival attendees as they dropped by the exhibit. Thank you to all who helped make the very first UNWLA table at this well-attended fes- tival a success! July 14 – The UNWLA was invited to a working breakfast with the Ambassador of Lithuania to the United States, His Excellency Mr. Ž ygimantas Pa- vilionis. The event was held at the Ukrainian In- stitute. This meeting’s goal was to discuss the cur- rent situation in Ukraine and Eastern Europe and its further impact. It is common knowledge that the Lithuanian nation is a staunch supporter of Ukraine and this was reiterated at this breakfast. Roksolana Misilo represented the UNWLA. L-R: Roksolana Misilo, UNWLA Vice President of Public Relations; Ambassador Pavilionis; Elizabeth Aldute Belzer, Senior Scout Master of the New York Lithuanian scouts; Lithuanian Consul General (NY) Julius Pra- nevicius.
