6 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2015 The UNWLA Hosts a Forum on Ukrainian Women in Times of War by Marta Burachok The forum “The Ukraine Conflict and War- time Gender Violence,” sponsored jointly by the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organi- zations and the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, was hosted by the New York Regional Council on December 6, 2014, at the UNWLA Headquarters. It featured panel presenta- tions that explored the multitude of ways in which the Ukrainian war affects women. Over 40 people attended this event. Moderator Dr. Martha Kichorowska Ke- balo introduced the theme of the panel. She spoke of how the current war has affected women as par- ticipants, as victims, and as caretakers. Dr. Marian Rubchak of Valparaiso University recounted how the rebirth of nationhood on the EuroMaidan also sparked the rebirth of the feminist spirit and the formation of the Zhinocha Sotnia (Women’s Squadron). Ayla Bakkalli, the U.S. Representative of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, gave an impassioned speech about the plight of the Crimean Tatars since Russia’s military invasion of the Crimea. Finally, Roksolana Misilo, the UNWLA’s 4th Vice President for Public Relations, spoke about the UNWLA’s newly established Aid to Ukrainian War Victims Fund, meant to cover both the immediate and the long-term needs of severely wounded warriors and their families. Ms. Misilo gave specific examples of how the fund has already helped wounded soldiers and bereft families. After a question-and-answer session with the audience, the conversations continued over a reception. All proceeds from this event were donated to the UNWLA War Victims Fund. Generous con- tributions were also made to the fund that evening Forum speakers and organizers (l-r): Dr. Martha Kichorowska Kebalo, Professor Marian Rubchak, Ayla Bakkalli, Roksolana Misilo, Marta Burachok, and Mari- ya Andriyovych. by Maria Rudensky-Silver and Natalia Sonevytsky. In a departure from the norm, at least for the New York Regional Council, the publicity for this event was done through email and social me- dia. The result was a good multigenerational mix in the audience, which included both younger and older members as well as a number of persons new to the UNWLA—something for which I most hoped as the Organizational Chair. My co-organizer, Mariya Andriyovych, and I are grateful to the programming organizer, Mar- tha Kebalo, for rounding up such an accomplished panel of speakers. Their diversity made the forum interesting, informative, and thought-provoking. We want to thank the New York Regional Council for their financial underwriting of this event. Many thanks are also due to Nataliya Kovalyshyn for her work and to Nadiya Danylyshyn, Andrea Kebalo, Olena Kebalo, and Joseph Falu for helping the event run smoothly. Thanks also to Joe Messaoud for his photography. For more on the Aid to Ukrainian War Vic- tims Fund, contact UNWLA Social Welfare Chair, Lidia Bilous, at Lidia@Bilous.net. Conversations among audience members continued at the reception after the forum. Photos by Joe Messaoud
