4 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2015 MEETING WITH LT. NADIYA SAVCHENKO’S ATTORNEYS AT THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM IN NEW YORK by Roksolana Misilo, 4th Vice President for Public Relations On December 9, 2014, the UNWLA Exec- utive Committee sponsored a meeting at the Ukrainian Museum with the attorneys of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko who, as we know, has been captured and is currently imprisoned in Russia on false charges. Attending members of the UNWLA had an opportunity to meet with attorneys Mark Feygin and Nikolai Polozov who came to the United States with the main objective of achieving ‘prisoner of war’ status for Lt. Nadiya Savchenko. They had previously met in Washington, D.C., with the Ambassador of Ukraine, Mr. Olexander Motsyk, and select members of Congress. In New York City, they had a meeting with the Permanent Representative from Ukraine to the United Na- tions, Mr. Yuriy Sergeyev. Although they are working on a tight schedule, the attorneys met with us because the UNWLA has been a staunch supporter of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko, rallying on her behalf since her capture in June. At that time, the UNWLA had launched many action campaigns regarding Lt. Savchenko by writing to Representative Marcy Kaptur, co-chair of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, and other members of the United States government, asking them to request Lt. Nadiya Savchenko’s freedom. At the Ukrainian Museum, Mr. Feygin and Mr. Polozov spoke through interpreter Vla- dislav Burlitskiy, a member of the Russian Oppo- sition Party. The attorneys informed the audience that Lt. Nadiya Savchenko had received and read the letter from the UNWLA and expressed her thanks. They said that she receives many letters of support, and especially cards from children, which help her stay strong. The attorneys have access to Nadiya. They state that she has a very strong will and is very patriotic, which helps her remain “OK.” Attorney Mark Feygin told the audience that both he and Mr. Polozov work on human rights issues and represent many others in such cases, including Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Jemilev and his son. Mr. Feygin explained that they have definite proof that Lt. Savchenko is in- nocent: they are in possession of documents prov- ing that she was arrested two hours before the Russian journalists of whose murder she is ac- cused were killed. Despite the evidence, freeing Lt. Savchenko has been a challenge. The strategy which the attorneys are now pursuing is working to help Nadiya obtain ‘prisoner of war’ status. For her to be listed POW by the International Red Cross is part of their goal. However, because the situation in Ukraine is technically considered an internal conflict and not a war, Lt. Savchenko has not been declared a POW yet. The attorneys request that the diaspo- ra take up Lt. Savchenko's cause and contact their representatives and the International Red Cross to support POW status for Lt. Nadiya Savchenko. Attorneys Mark Feygin and Nikolai Polozov, Honorary UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj, UNWLA 4th Vice President for Public Relations Roksolana Misilo, and UNWLA Treasurer Oksana Antoniuk.
