“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 31 “ЩЕДРИК” – ЩЕДРІВКА, ЯКУ ЗНАЄ УВЕСЬ СВІТ Ця мелодія – не лише найвідоміша ук- раїнська мелодія у світі, але, напевно, й найстаріша у світі мелодія з популярних на сьогоднішній день, оскільки народилась ще в дохристиянські часи. І оспівується в ній прихід нового, щедрого року. “Щедрик” став популярним завдяки ві- домому українському композиторові Миколі Леонтовичу. Ця композиція – обробка давньої української новорічної щедрівки – на сьогод- нішній день найвідоміша новорічна пісня в усьому світі в перекладі на англійську мову, що має назву “Колядка дзвонів” (“Carol of the Bells”). Перша редакція “Щедрика” була напи- сана до 1901- 1902 рр., друга редакція – в 1906-1908 рр., третя – 1914 р., четверта – 1916, і нарешті, п’ята – 1919 року. Уперше “Щедрик” був виконаний хо- ром Київського Університету у 1916 р. в Києві, а 5 жовтня 1921 р. “Щедрик” був вперше презентований на концерті в Карнегі Голл в Ню Йорку. У 1936 році Пітер Вільховський (також родом з України), який працював для радіо NBC, пише англійську версію слів до “Щедри- ка” – “Carol of the Bells”. Згодом пісня зазву- чала у популярних кінофільмах “Гаррі Пот- тер”, “Сам вдома” та мультиплікаційному сері- ялі “Південний парк”. Ориґінальні інтерпретації твору роби- ли відомі рок-гурти “Barenaked Ladies” та “Sa- vatage”, а переробка пісні у стилі “техно-данс” від DJ Demonix наразі стала культовою класи- кою електронного андеґраунду. Це дуже попу- лярний мотив і для реклями. Ну і жоден хор не може оминути цієї пісні – вона є в переліку обов’язкових. “Carol of the Bells” має безліч обробок – від класики до року, репу, рейву та диско варіянтів. Джерело: www.aratta-ukraine.com “SHCHEDRYK”—AN EPIPHANY CAROL KNOWN BY THE ENTIRE WORLD This melody is not only the best known Ukrainian melody in the world, but also most likely the oldest of all popular tunes played today, since it dates back to pre-Christian times. In this “carol” the coming of the new, generous year is extolled. Shchedryk , the Epiphany carol, became popular thanks to the well-known Ukrainian composer, Mykola Leontovych. This composi- tion—an updated version of an ancient Ukrainian New Year's song—is at present the best known New Year's song in the world. In English it is known as “The Carol of the Bells.” The first version of Shchedryk was written before 1901- 1902, the second one between 1906 and 1908, the third one in 1914, the fourth in 1916, and the final one, the fifth, in 1919. Initially Shche- dryk was per- formed in 1916 in Kyiv by the choir of Kyiv University, and on October 5, 1921, it was performed in a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1936 Peter Wilhousky (also of Ukrainian lineage), who worked for Radio NBC, wrote the English version text, “The Carol of the Bells.” In time this song was heard in popular movies such as Harry Potter , Home Alone , and the animated series South Park . Rock groups such as “Barenaked Ladies” and “Savatage” developed their interpretations of this tune, while the revision into the “techno- dance” style by DJ Demonix has become a cult classic of the electronic underground. Frequently this tune is also used in commercials. Finally, many a choir includes this song in its repertoire. It is evident that “Carol of the Bells” has innumerable versions and revisions, including classical, rock, rap, rave, and disco music adapta- tions.
