16 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2015 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ОКРУГ І ВІДДІЛІВ СУА BRANCH 118 CELEBRATES THE UNWLA’S 90th ANNIVERSARY Branch 118 members wearing their new aprons with the UNWLA logo. Shortly after reading the announcement that the UNWLA Headquarters would be celebrat- ing the UNWLA’s 90th anniversary with an art exhibit at the Ukrainian Museum in New York, featuring Ukrainian artists in the diaspora, the members of UNWLA Branch 118 decided to cele- brate the occasion in a similar fashion. Branch 118 President, Chrystia Brynzdia, and Branch 118 Treasurer, Martha Noukas, worked cohesively to coordinate the celebration, which would include a banquet for members and guests and would feature lectures by Ukrainian artists in Houston. Two months of planning and hard work resulted in a delightful evening, both delectable and educational, despite the remnant rains of Hurricane Patricia, which caused some street flooding in the Houston area and prevented a few members from attending. Branch 118 celebrated the UNWLA’s 90th anniversary on Saturday evening, October 24, 2015, in the Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church Parish Hall in Houston, Texas. Several Branch 118 members were tasked with creating tri-fold post- ers, promoting the various UNWLA programs. Olia Hirka and Julia Dankowich created posters about the UNWLA Scholarship Program and the Ukrainian Museum. Martha Noukas put together a poster about the Our Life magazine and UNWLA membership. Luba Dub’s poster highlighted the work of the UNWLA Social Welfare program. All the posters were beautifully done and nicely dis- played on tables, amid an array of UNWLA Con- vention books, Ukrainian embroidery donated by past scholarship recipients, and numerous pieces of Branch 118 memorabilia and photographs. The Branch 118 Millenium Quilt was hung prominently in the center of the display area, and was beauti- fully accented by numerous paper-cut flowers, by artist Khrystyna Balushka, who graciously loaned the flowers for the evening. As attendees gathered in the hall, they en- joyed cocktails and appetizers, while listening to the delightful music by Ukrainian violinist Volodymyr Kotsiouruba. Chrystia Bryndzia invited everyone to their chairs, and introduced those seated at the main table, which included the Honorary Consul of Ukraine, Greg Buchai, and his wife Nadia; Branch 118 President Chrystia Bryndzia and her husband Taras; Fr. Mykola Dovzhuk and Pani Luda, and Branch 118 Treasurer, Martha Noukas. Fr. Dovzhuk congratulated the women of the UNWLA for their many years of dedication and work and led the blessing of the food. Chrystia Bryndzia then invited everyone to the elaborate buf- fet, catered by Fadi’s Mediterranean Grill, which consisted of Greek salad, hummus, tabouli, beet salad, rice and lentils, beef kabobs, and chicken Di- jon skewers. The pastries and desserts were pre- pared and donated by the members of Branch 118. After dinner, Honorary Consul Greg Buchai congratulated the UNWLA on their 90th anniversary and complimented the work done in Houston by Branch 118. Chrystia Bryndzia gave an insightful short history of the UNWLA, explaining its mission and objectives. She then invited artist Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak, one of the featured art- ists in the Ukrainian Museum exhibit, to speak about her art.
