“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 13 Last month’s issue was dedicated mostly to the 90th anniversary of our organization, but some important events in which UNWLA members par- ticipated should not be overlooked; therefore, please allow me to collect and summarize them in the “Calendar of Events” format below. The fall of 2015 has been filled with important, informative, and memorable events. September 25 The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation in cooperation with the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States invited the UNWLA to attend and participate in a forum Ukraine's Ongoing Battle for Freedom , which was held in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Since the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America is involved in the hu- manitarian effort in Ukraine, it supported the fo- rum. For this event, the President of the UNWLA Detroit Regional Council, Vera Andrushkiw, to- gether with our Social Welfare Chair, Lidia Bilous, prepared an informative display poster about our organization’s work in this sphere. September 26 President Poroshenko and the First Lady of Ukraine (together with the Presi- dent’s delegation) arrived in New York City for the opening of the 70th Session at the United Nations. A by-invitation only reception was held in their honor at the Ukrainian Institute of America. The President spoke about the importance of the sup- port of the Ukrainian diaspora and requested its continued participation in Ukraine’s democratic evolvement. This was also the President’s 50th birthday and the attendees of the reception sang him a resounding “Mnohaya Lita.” The UNWLA President attended. September 27 The First Lady of Ukraine, Maryna Poroshenko, visited the Ukrainian Museum. She exchanged warm greetings with several American families who adopted children from Ukraine, re- ceived a tour of the Ukrainian Avant-Garde exhibit, and briefly met with the Ukrainian Museum Board of Directors. UNWLA members who are Museum Board members were invited and attended this event. September 29 On the invitation of the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in New York, UNWLA Vice President for Public Relations, Roksolana Misilo, and President Marianna Zajac attended a round table, “Future of Eastern Europe: Empowerment of Women.” The goal of the discus- sion was to advance the role of women in manag- ing and resolving conflicts and fostering economic and political reforms. The President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaite, opened and narrated the pro- gram. Other participants were the Presidents of Croatia and Hungary, Ms. Madeleine Albright, Melanne Verveer, and the sister of Nadia Sav- chenko, Vira Savchenko. This event was held on the initiative of the Council of Women World Leaders and in the spirit of female solidarity and cooperation, it aimed to suggest solutions to some of the world’s bigger problems. September 29 UNWLA President was invited to attend President Poroshenko’s speech to the Unit- ed Nation’s General Assembly. The President’s speech was honest and impassioned. September 29 An informal meeting with Mrs. Maryna Poroshenko was held at the Ukrainian Mis- sion to the United Nations. UNWLA President ex- tended warm greetings on behalf of the small gath- ering of women organizational leaders after which each representative was invited to share her organi- zation’s goals and work with the First Lady. At the end of the meeting, UNWLA President gave Mrs. Women leaders of Ukrainian-American organizations meet Maryna Poroshenko at the Ukrainian Mission to the United Nations.
