NELL SOSNOWSKY Nell Sosnowsky had been a member of Olena Teliha Branch 58 in Detroit, MI, since the Branch’s founding in 1947 and until Nell’s passing on January 5, 2015. As an artist, teacher, and musician, Nell made a great contribution to Branch 58 and the Ukraini- an community in Detroit. Nell was quietly visible attending every Ukrainian event, and her talent in the arts of cal- ligraphy, pysanky , and iconography was enjoyed by all of us. The Ukrainian Village Project in Warren, MI, St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in West Detroit, and the Ukrainian Cul- tural Center in Warren, MI, was where Nell and her sisters, Helen Sedorak and Ann Sedorak, served with great dedication. Nell and her sisters kept all the archives from 1947 until 2012, making approximately twelve albums of pictures and articles of Branch 58 activities as well as events celebrating Ukraini- an traditions in the Detroit region. We hope that a personal exhibit can be made out of these materi- als for the entire Detroit region to enjoy. Nell cared deeply for children, teaching kindergarten and making costumes for them so that they could enjoy life in times of poverty. She made pysanky year-round for family and friends. Nell’s son William and wife Julia and her daughter Marynell expressed their admiration for their mother’s talents at the service in her memory. The memorial service, which took place on January 10, 2015, was attended by Marceline Chomiak and Julia Stoiko (Br. 58 co-Presidents), Helen Hryshko (Br. 58 Treasurer) and her hus- band John Hryshko, and Josephine Bobowski and her daughter Tina of the Detroit Regional Coun- cil. The Regional Council President, Irena Petrina, expressed condolences for our loss, and a special program was organized to remember our mem- bers who passed away in 2014: Olga Bochnewych, Nell Sosnowsky, and Sophia Philips (sister of Jo- sephine Bobowski, who is our branch’s only sur- viving founding member). Julia Stoiko, Branch 58 Co-President HELEN BRUDNY MELINYSHYN With deep sorrow, we announce that Helen Brudny Melinyshyn passed away on February 2, 2015. She had been a member of Branch 36 for over 50 years, and for many years, she served as the Branch secre- tary. Helen was an expert writer of pysanky and taught classes at the Nativi- ty BVM Church in Chicago. She donated many of her pysanky to the church and to the UNWLA bazaars. Helen’s mother, Anna Brudny, was a founding member of Branch 36 in 1932 and its first president. 24.08.2011
