“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 15 time of conflict, and the USA representative of the Crimean Tatar parliament. Discussions on the HIV-positive population within the ATO zone en- sued. This marginalized group is not receiving required medication from the self-appointed gov- ernments of Donetsk and Luhansk, and this issue poses considerable future risks for the population within and beyond the Donbas. HIV/AIDS con- tinues to be a very serious problem in the country. Thursday, March 12th – “Productivity, Well-Being, and Gender Politics” focused on life balance policies for men and women. Panelists included both government officials (Italy, Bulgar- ia, and the Czech Republic) and persons involved in various aspects of gender research. The panel focused on the fact that women do not have the same legal rights and privileges as men to work or travel, and on the complicated issue of stereotyp- ing. This session reminded us of the private and professional lives of Ukrainian women and the reason for the initial impetus for the UNWLA to fund the Women’s Studies Lectureship Endow- ment at the Ukrainian Catholic University. Saturday, March 14th – The WFUWO- organized event, “Gender-Based Violence in the Context of Armed Conflict in Ukraine,” was held at the Ukrainian Museum. It included the show- ing of a poignant excerpt from the film Tortured Feminity on the victimization of women in the east of Ukraine (to watch the film, please visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7q0ypWBPK aY). Unimaginable, haunting stories of torture, both physical and mental, were relayed. These women and men are truly heroes as well as vic- tims of Ukraine’s conflict. During the reception portion of this event, the President of the National Council of Women of Ukraine, Dr. Lyudmila Porokhniak-Hanowska, presented members of the UNWLA National Board—the President of the UNWLA, the Vice President of Public Relations, and the UNWLA Social Welfare Chairperson— with certificates of gratitude for their work in support of Ukraine—both aid to wounded soldiers as well as families of the deceased and advocacy appeals to the U.S. government officials, especial- ly in defense of Nadiya Savchenko. This event was organized by Dr. Martha Kichorowska-Kebalo, the Main Representative to the United Nations from the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Or- ganizations. Dr. Kebalo also deservedly received such a certificate of acknowledgment from Dr. Porokhniak-Hanowska for her tireless efforts in defense of Ukrainian women and families at the United Nations. The UNWLA is obligated to defend its brothers and sisters in Ukraine—it is one of the primary reasons for our organization’s existence. We will continue to do so in the future. It is heart- breaking to receive letters of acknowledgment from the citizens of Ukraine in the difficult cir- cumstances which they face, but at the same time, it gives us the drive and stamina to continue. In summary, all the information which we heard via a variety of sources underscored what we already knew—the very seriousness of the sit- uation in Ukraine. Even if the country were left in peace and the aggressor truly backed off, Ukraine would still have many internal issues to address— be it its economic status, the corruption, or the broader political challenges. Governments of the world and the Ukrainian diaspora worldwide pour aid into Ukraine and continue to advocate for its support in the countries of their residency. What will need to happen for the tide to turn? Christ Is Risen! Indeed He Has Risen! May the miracle of Easter bring you and your families renewed hope, faith, love, and joy.
