Our conversations with Lithuanian representatives confirmed that they stand in solidarity with Ukraine wherever they may be living. March 9th - March 20th March 9th marked the beginning of two weeks of events, panels, and dis- cussions at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations. Officially titled “Bejing+20,” this conference celebrated and followed up on the 4th World Conference on Women held during the summer of 1995 with the participation of 189 member states. This 1995 event was the very first time that representatives from independent Ukraine and those from the Ukrainian diaspora stood side by side addressing the rights of women and children. As a member of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Or- ganizations (which has non-governmental organi- zation status at the UN), the UNWLA sent dele- gates to these events and/or participated in its sessions. Roksolana Misilo and I officially repre- sented the UNWLA at this year’s CSW. Monday, March 9th – M. Zajac and R. Misilo attended the NGO CSW Forum reception held for all UN and NGO delegates attending the 59th CSW at the Armenian Convention Center Ballroom. This event gave the participants the opportunity to mingle with other representatives from around the world. Tuesday, March 10th – Ukraine orga- nized the panel “Women in Ukraine and the Right to Peace and Security.” Panel speakers included the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the President of the National Council of Women of Ukraine, WFUWO President, and representa- March 8th. Quite unexpectedly, the event was attended by Melanne Verveer, who is of Ukrainian ancestry and who is presently the Ex- ecutive Director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security. She formerly served as the first U.S. Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues and Chief of Staff for Hillary Clin- ton. The panel ad- dressed the right to freedom from violence but also the right to a life of sustainable de- velopment. March 10th. This event was followed by a UN Press Conference organized by Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN, Yuriy Sergeyev. Iryna Lutsenko and three other female deputies of Parliament an- swered questions posed by the press. The topics addressed ranged from the status of the IDP (in- ternally displaced persons) to the status of the Jewish population within and out of the Donbas areas. Thursday, March 12th – On this day, the WFUWO organized a panel that explored ob- stacles to healthcare provision to women during wars as well as during population displacement.
