30 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2014 HOW TO LOOK YOUNGER by Ihor Magun, MD, FACP Let's face it, who does not want to look better and younger? The entertainment industry literally revolves around “looking young and vi- brant.” Many entertainers make it into a full-time job—only with the help of so many products and individuals. Although we do not have access to all the resources at their disposal, we certainly have the ability and sufficient information to improve our appearance with some helpful tips. * During the day our skin is busy fending off all the elements, so most of skin rejuvenation efforts should take place at night. It is paramount to wash your face well before going to bed with a mild cleaning agent. In the morning all that is necessary is to use lukewarm water. Excessive washing removes too much of the skin oils and can be drying. (Exceptions to this rule are very oily skin or possible other skin issues which may have to be taken into account.) Apply a retinol- containing cream (available over the counter and by prescription). Regular use is a must. There is no one specific brand, but daily maintenance is paramount. When these creams are started, it is prudent to increase their use gradually, for exam- ple applying every third day in the beginning and slowly progressing to daily use. Retinol-based creams, especially the prescription versions, can cause redness and dryness when applied for the first time, so go slow in the first few days. * Purchase a moisturizer, preferably with UV pro- tection, and apply every morning year-round. Se- lect a product that you feel “quenches” the skin. It is a known fact that European women and now men utilize cream as a daily ritual even at a young age. As the saying goes—moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Look for ingredients that hydrate— glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and dimethicone. These act like magnets binding water to skin, hence in- creasing moisture. * While we are on the subject of skin moisturiz- ing, drinking a good amount of water daily will keep your skin cleansed and hydrated, providing a healthy glow. * Get adequate rest. Sleeping at least seven hours a night is the beauty rule. * Focus on one facial feature that is so obvious and often not addressed—the eyebrows. Properly shaped eyebrows bring balance and proportion to the entire face, softening or enhancing facial fea- tures. This can create a more youthful appear- ance overall. Seek some inexpensive professional advice: it will be money well spent. * Avoid rubbing your eyes. The skin under the eyes is literally the thinnest on the body and very sensitive. Excessive rubbing can cause blood ves- sels to burst, causing under-eye shadows and in- flammation which translates to puffy eyes. The solution to this problem is not that simple, but at least avoid rubbing your eyes and consider a cream that contains caffeine. Such a cream con- stricts blood vessels and when used twice a day makes dark circles less noticeable. * The average person subconsciously touches her face about sixty-four times a day. This is done in many ways, such as leaning your face on your hands. Make a conscious effort to break this hab- it. * You knew this was coming—healthy eating. Eat colorfully, incorporating many varieties of fruits and vegetables, and avoid fad diets. Try to eat in such a way all the time. * Whiten your teeth. There are so many over-the- counter treatments available and regular use of agents helps maintain the effect. Believe it or not, many celebrities only drink certain staining bev- erages with a straw in order to eliminate tooth stains. Regular dental visits to correct simple problems can put a smile on anyone’s face. * Everyone looks better with some “color”—a tan. Now that you are already avoiding the sun and using UV protection, consider a spray-on tanner or lotion. These are safe and available year-round in pharmacies. You need not apply all over, but use it occasionally on your face can give you an attractive glow. * If you happen to have some lines around the lips, do not use dark lipsticks or gloss. Try lip- stick colors such as light cocoa, pink, or taupe. You can get advice on colors at many makeup counters. See what works for you. * Lastly, it is really not about how you look but about the confidence you exude. Apply the sug- gestions above, know that you are practicing the best health and beauty advice, and savor the com- pliments you receive!
