“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2014 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 23 GERDANY WORKSHOPS FOR BRANCH 124 MEMBERS IN ST. PETERSBURG, FL Artistic talents came out in full bloom during two gerdany workshops organized for UNWLA Branch 124 members (and a few friends) in May and June of 2014. The first workshop on Saturday, May 10, 2014, introduced this old Ukrainian art of bead netting or beadwork. This single-thread technique of bead netting developed in the late 16th century in the territory of what is now Ukraine. What makes it unique is the careful expansion of the pattern to create a curve in the piece, resulting in a round flat collar perfect for making necklaces and jewelry. Our instructor was Iryna (Ira) Bilokryla, a member of Branch 124, and a gerdany maker for many years. Each participant could choose three different bags of beads of varied colors, shapes, textures, and sizes. Ira provided a five-page in- struction packet of nine various gerdany designs and suggested one particular design for all of us to follow during the workshop, using our individual tastes for the combination of colors. With the provided beading needle and beading thread, we set to work! The fifteen women who gathered for the workshop included two sisters and a mother with her two daughters and a granddaughter. At the end of two and a half hours, all of us had beaded a portion of our first gerdan necklace, and we went home with “homework” to finish our pieces and return for the follow-up workshop. Ira Bilokryla and Irena Krywusha, instructors at the Branch 124 gerdany workshops. Completed gerdany by Branch 124 members. Our final workshop was held on Sunday, June 8, 2014. We brought in our finished neck- laces and marveled at the various colors and sizes that each of us had created. We learned how to attach the finishing clasps so that we could wear our gerdany . Some of us had made several neck- laces in the meantime, using the provided beads and designs. We are most grateful to Ira Bilokryla for being our instructor, as well as to Irena Krywu- sha, an accomplished beader and fellow member who helped some of us novices. Many thanks also to Olya Czerkas, our Branch President who orga- nized the workshops and ensured that we had the needed supplies. The members of Branch 124 thoroughly enjoyed learning this old Ukrainian folk art. Ola Movchan Novak, Member of Branch 124 At the gerdany workshop on May 10, 2014.
